There’s a particular kind of magic that happens when you gather the people you love most in a place where time moves differently. Where the rhythm of the day is dictated not by schedules and obligations, but by the rising sun, the calls of the wild, and the gentle pull toward family connection.
This is the essence of Londolozi’s Pioneer Camp.
Nestled beneath the dappled shade of ebony trees, with the Sand River stretching out before it in a 180-degree embrace, Pioneer Camp stands as Londolozi’s most secluded sanctuary. But to call it simply a camp would be to miss the point entirely. Pioneer Camp is a home – a private bush home where families return year after year, not as guests, but as part of a continuing story.
Pioneer Camp is the culmination of five decades of design experience in the safari industry – a symphony of style, bushveld architecture and nature. The Varty family pursued a delicate alchemy – marrying Ralph Lauren’s timeless sophistication with the soul of an original safari homestead, ensuring that every refined detail would only deepen the warmth that calls families to their bush home, year after year.
“What matters most is that the families who return year after year to Pioneer Camp still find ‘their’ safari home waiting for them. We protect the warmth and familiarity they cherish. It must always feel like home” – Shan Varty
From the moment you arrive, crossing the glass skywalkways that connect the three private suites like veins of light through an ancient forest, you understand that this place was designed with intention. Every detail whispers the same promise: you belong here, together.
A sense of history pervades the camp through faithfully restored memorabilia – photographs capturing moments long past, silver and crystal that have graced countless family dinners, old suitcases that speak of journeys taken, and gramophones that once filled evenings with music. Most striking is the bespoke, one-of-a-kind wallpaper that lines the Pioneer Camp bar, telling the story of the lives of safari pioneers from just under a century ago.
The gardens throughout Pioneer camp carry their own legacy, reflecting generations of Varty women who have worked with nature to create indigenous, meditative spaces where impala lilies bloom in brilliant bursts and aloes stand sentinel, drawing butterflies and sunbirds into a constant, gentle dance of life.
This is family hospitality – the kind that says kick off your shoes, help yourself from the kitchen, gather around the long table, and let the afternoon stretch into evening without noticing where one ends and the other begins.
At the heart of Pioneer Camp beats something truly unique: the interactive kitchen. Of all five camps at Londolozi, Pioneer is the only one with this distinctive layout. Here, as your personal chef prepares local South African delicacies – dishes drawn from ancient Varty family recipes – the formality of “being served” dissolves into something far more precious.
It’s in these moments – watching a breeding herd of elephants cross the riverbed just beyond the window while someone kneads dough and another stirs something fragrant on the stove – that you understand what family hospitality truly means.
If you arrive early enough in the morning, you’ll be greeted by what might be the most telling sound of Pioneer Camp: laughter. Between the butlers, housekeepers, maintenance and chefs, everyone is sharing a story and a laugh as they get on with their morning duties. This laughter-filled environment doesn’t happen everywhere. It’s a reminder that the essence of a place isn’t found in its furnishings alone, but in the joy of those who care for it.
Each of Pioneer Camp’s three luxury suites is a world unto itself, yet perfectly connected to the whole through glass walkways that speak to the camp’s essential philosophy: privacy and togetherness, independence and connection, the freedom to retreat and the ease of gathering.
Floor-to-ceiling sliding glass panels frame the wilderness like living art that changes with each passing hour, while Victorian bathrooms blend marble, chrome, and mahogany with outdoor showers that let you stand beneath the African sky. Private plunge pools offer sanctuary, the explorer lounge holds space for board games and easy silence, and the full-length lap pool becomes a meeting place where morning coffee turns into conversations that meander like the river itself.
For grandparents travelling with adult children and grandchildren, for friends seeking both adventure and intimacy, these spaces become pathways to the kind of moments that define not just a holiday, but a lifetime of shared memories.
Perhaps what makes Pioneer Camp truly special is how effortlessly it accommodates the complex choreography of multi-generational travel. This is not a place where you have to choose between luxury and authenticity, between adventure and rest, between spending time with family and having space to breathe. Pioneer Camp holds room for all of it, simultaneously, generously.
There’s a reason families book Pioneer Camp year after year, returning like migratory birds to the same beloved place. It’s because Pioneer Camp doesn’t just offer you a safari – it gives you the gift of unhurried time, of shared meals around a long table, of sunrise game drives where three generations sit together watching the world wake up, of evening stories told around a fire that connects to the spirit of those first safari pioneers.
This is the essence of Pioneer Camp. This is what we protect. This is what we invite you to experience.
We look forward to welcoming you home.

Lucky families, indeed, who can visit Pioneer Camp. Such a beautiful home away from home!
We have so many beautiful memories of Pioneer Camp, starting with our first trip to Londolozi with our best friends and experiencing the bush with John Holley and Richard Siwela. There have been important birthdays with family and friends, and times when we have met new friends. Each trip has been magical, generating stories that we continue to tell….and lots of firsts, our first leopard cubs, scrambling up the tree, the cheetah hiding amongst the long grass, the pangolin rolled tightly in a ball, the honey badger with the terrapin, the wine tasting by the pond, and the familiar faces meeting us at the airstrip. Londolozi is magical, and Pioneer is an oasis where each time it feels like we are coming home. We are looking forward to our return. Thank you Varty family for creating this special place.
Hi Megan, Pioneer Camp is an exceptional place filled with so many beautiful images and antiques from over a hundred years ago. The Varty family have really made this Camp and all other Camps a life time experience to visit. Beautiful furniture displaying very good taste, gardens are neatly kept and the swimming pool is always a winner in the summer.
