on The Styx Male: A Growing Presence in a Changing Landscape

Hi Nic! The Styx male and the Breakaway Female are a duo I’ve been particularly interested in. They are both beautiful, he’s spectacular, you are right, his eyes are fantastic, his mane and his features. She’s also a truly beautiful lionesses. As carriers of strong lines (Ndzenga and Birmingham if I am not wrong) they make a very resilient and tactical pair. Let’s hope they try the way to make themselves dominant in an own territory. Looking forward to hearing the developments, thank you so much Nic also for the wonderful pictures!

Hi Nic,
I just wanted to let you know that I am attending a dinner at Michael’s on East in Sarasota Florida to benefit the Good Works Foundation in October. I live 1 1/2 hours south of Sarasota in Fort Myers and when they host an event that invites many Londolozi visitors and contributors to the Good Works Foundation, I attend. It is so nice to mingle with them all and hear stories of Londolozi and the Foundation. I hope you and Advice are doing well and miss our safaris, but always enjoy seeing the blogs every day and imagining being there.

I agree, he is such a gorgeous lion, and his cute girlfriend! I think it looks like he has white eyeliner on. We were lucky enough to see them both in May with Brandon and Rich, and his presence is undeniable. Thank for the blog about him – hope he is around for many years to come.

Thanks for the update, Nic – I saw these 2 together last November. As you say, he is very handsome. That beautiful mane makes him look like he’s just been to the hairdressers!

Following lions’ lives has always bee so intriguing.
A try interesting blog on the Styx male, Nic.
I saw him together with the Kambula lioness in April. Now he has developed into an even more impressing male lion.
I do hope that he will find his place in this competitive world of predators at Londolozi and his partner, the lioness, too.

Hi Nic, I have a question: I know there are currently two young males who often roam around Londolozi—Styx male and the Nkuhuma breakaway male. Have these two young males ever had any kind of encounter? Do you think they’re aware of each other’s existence? If these two young males were to join forces, they could pose a threat to any of the dominant males, since both have a long track record despite their young age. Do you think the presence of the Kambula breakaway female might be preventing that alliance?

Thank you very much for your blog!

What a great follow-up on the Styx male from your initial post in 2024. He is such an impressive young male and whilst it would be more advantageous for him to form a coalition with another male ( a shame that the single Skorro male made an appearance and left quickly) , he has been successful in surviving with the Breakaway Kambula by his side. More interesting will be what happens if this female falls pregnant… can he protect the cubs?! Much will depend on what happens with the Gijimas and the N’wawishakas in addition to the Plains Camp males. So much can happen…..

He is a very handsome fellow and she’s a beauty. We saw him and the Kambula Breakaway female during our May visit and they were mating then. Is it unusual that she’s not pregnant yet?

Hi Nic. Thanks for this update on the Styx male and Breakaway female. They are both stunning lions and he is a gorgeous male without any scars on his face. Maybe that is a good for them to be mating so he can have his own pride. But the dynamics often change with lions.

Great update on the Styx male lion, Nic. He seems like a formidable young lion who is beginning to come into his own. But as you said, it is quite difficult for a single lion to thrive when there are strong coalitions all around. Also, as you said, the decisions he makes, and with a bit of luck, he could have a bright future. I for one will be following!!!

He is definitely my fave and most handsome lion king!

I was wondering when they would start mating. There is clearly a lot of affection and bonding between them. I loved seeing them together in Sept 2024.

LGR – I forgot to leave my thoughts on this fascinating blog from Saturday, so sorry if it’s a bit late. That blog on the lone and brotherless big young Styx male lion was very interesting to see and read there. I don’t know many litter mate brothers and sisters he had at the time when he was born in the relatively early stages of 2021. Do you? It is such a shame that he’s the only one out of his male siblings and cousins that has survived to this very day. Isn’t it? If he had been able to form a coalition with his litter mate brothers and/or cousins as they grew up, then he might well possibly have been a very well established and big handsome male lion and also might well have taken over a pride of their own there by now.

But sadly for him, he wasn’t to form a nice big and stable coalition with his litter mate brothers and cousins at all, as they were all killed by other lions just as they were all nearing independence age there at the time. So he has just had to go it all alone from his own birth pride with absolutely no related male back up behind him what so ever, and he’s got a very lonely existence too.

If he had been able to form just a nice big and stable coalition with his litter mate brothers and cousins, then they might well have formed a group of at least three or four males altogether in total. I’m sure he massively impresses his unrelated and older girlfriend who he has been with for the last couple of years now, but it’s just a pity he hasn’t got any brothers to just back him up.

I think it’s fair to say that he is one of the best and most handsome male lions that you see around there on your huge reserve. Isn’t he? He is a very big and handsome 400 pound killing machine with a massive and impressive blonde mane and size. With absolutely no brothers or male cousins to back him up, his only hope of establishing himself a pride and territory, is if he finds and teams up with another young male of a similar age like the young Nkuhu-ma breakaway male for example. Just like the older Nkuhuma 2016 male and Talamati males aren’t related, so I don’t see any reason why the Styx male and Nkuhuma breakaway 2021 male shoul-dn’t team up together jointly. Do you? I know they aren’t related either, but they were both born in the same year. He’ll have to be very careful not to draw the attention of other bigger and older well established males just to avoid a nasty confrontation with or end up getting killed and/or chased away by them. As a lone male, he wouldn’t be able to fend of a nasty attack alone all by himself at all. It’ll be impossible, so he’s going to end up been very vulnerable indeed if he keeps on roaring to announce himself and his presence as well as drawing unwanted attention to himself, as he’ll be in for a taste of his own medicine if he isn’t at all or very careful. I hope he keeps a very careful eye out for danger as walks and patrols about so much.

Do you think his older girlfriend, the Kambula breakaway lioness is fertile and possibly still able to have cubs of her own there at all, or is she infertile but just stuck with him for company as she might not be accepted back into her own birth pride in the future?

Hope to hear from you shortly.

I’ve always wondered if the Styx Male and Nkuhuma Breakaway Male would ever join forces should they encounter one another, and whether the Kambula female or Nkuhuma Breakaway lioness would join forces with one another or even the Tsalala lioness. Although reaching for straws, imagine the unit those three females would be?

I agree, he is a spectacular male. I find it interesting how short his hair is on his back. It looks quite different from our males.
