Mandela Day has become one of our favourite days in the Londolozi calendar.
Each year it offers us something far greater than an opportunity to complete a project or contribute 67 minutes of service. It invites us to pause together as a village. To reconnect with the values that have shaped this place, and to re-ground them, almost on a cellular level, into the community we are continually becoming.
For us, Mandela Day has never been about a single morning or afternoon.
It is about remembering that service is a state of consciousness.
As we gather each year, staff, guests and family, we are reminded of Madiba’s enduring belief that lasting change begins with simple acts performed with intention. Whether planting seeds, sharing meals, restoring spaces or simply standing alongside one another in quiet purpose, those 67 minutes become a form of living meditation. A conscious pause to remember who we are, what we value and how we choose to walk through the world.
And perhaps that is why Mandela Day holds such significance at Londolozi.
It reminds us that every day can be Mandela Day.
The spirit of Ubuntu, generosity and quiet service isn’t something reserved for the 18th of July. It is a way of meeting life. A way of seeing ourselves as part of something larger than ourselves, where every small act of care sends ripples far beyond what we can immediately see.
As is tradition here at Londolozi, we came together this year to celebrate Mandela Day, dedicating our 67 minutes of service in honour of the 67 years Madiba spent fighting for justice, equality, and freedom. This year, surrounded by the spirit of village consciousness, we asked ourselves the same question we ask every July:
What ripple effects can we set in motion by simply coming together?
The Londolozi Family dedicated our 67 minutes to service across four stations in our Futuristic African Village. Staff and guests worked side by side, and for those 67 minutes there was no distinction between the two. There was only the village, doing what it does best.
PEAKS FOR PURPOSE
New for 2026, and born from a collaboration between Londolozi and The Ripple Fund: a peak cap that carries more than shade from the African sun.
Every cap purchased supports community-led conservation and education initiatives, with a recommended base pledge of $67 inspired by Madiba’s 67 minutes of service. Guests were encouraged and welcome to up the pledge to whatever moved them on the day. Wear it home, and it keeps working long after you’ve left the reserve; a small, wearable symbol of the ripple effect one purchase can start.
2026 Impact: R72,376 raised for the Ripple Fund through Peaks for Purpose.
HONOURING OUR ELDERS
At this station, hands were busy packing care parcels for the residents of the Hlyaikesani Nursing Home, a local old age home whose residents rarely make it into anyone’s headlines. Blankets, toiletries, and the everyday essentials that are easy to take for granted until you don’t have them.
This one is rooted in a simple African value: those who came before us are never forgotten. Every parcel packed was a small act of dignity, made real by someone taking the time to think of a person they’d likely never meet.

MAGIC MARULAS
Hands in the soil, honouring ancient wisdom while planting for a future none of us will fully see. This station contributed to Save the Sand, the ambitious restoration project working to revitalise the Sabi Sand River Catchment.
Every Marula seedling planted today is a small act of faith; a bet that this tree, decades from now, will still be shading a riverbank, feeding an elephant, and holding the soil together for the farmers and families who depend on it downstream.
2026 Impact: 1,560 Marula seeds planted.
RUN FOR RIPPLE
Trainers laced, and the path through the Futuristic African Village put to good use. For every loop completed within the 67 minutes, Londolozi made a donation to The Ripple Fund, whether that loop was run, walked, or danced.
2026 Impact: 185 laps run for Ripple, translating into a R185,000 donation from Londolozi to the Ripple Fund to do more good work in the world.
Part of that path is Freedom’s Way, designed by land artist Max Bannister and running through the very heart of our village. It was walked into being in 1990, when Nelson Mandela, soon after 27 years in prison, chose Londolozi as one of the first places to visit on his long walk to freedom. Of all the places in the world he could have gone, he chose us.
He later wrote of that time:
“During my long walk to freedom, I had the rare privilege to visit Londolozi. There, I saw people of all races living in harmony amidst the beauty that Mother Nature offers. There I saw a living lion in the wild. Londolozi represents a model of the dream I cherish for the future of nature preservation for our country.”

So when our staff and guests ran, walked, or danced their laps this year, they weren’t just circling the village. They were retracing a path Madiba himself once walked, at a moment when he was choosing, quite literally, which direction to take next. His spirit still runs through this village; not as a memory we take out once a year, but as the current we walk in every day.
Ubuntu. I am because you are.

That, perhaps, is one of the greatest privileges of a life well lived: not simply the moments we remember, but the ripples we leave behind.
To the guests who joined us in the village this year: thank you. Whether you packed a parcel, planted a seedling, laced up your trainers, or simply pulled on a cap, you stood alongside our staff as one village for those 67 minutes, and that made all the difference. It was such a joy to be together.

I remember during my first visit to Londolozi, our time there coincided with Mandela’s birthday, and I remember hearing the story of how when Mandela was finally released from prison, one of his first stops was Londolozi, and he said, “This is my vision of what all Africa can be.”
