There are certain leopards that become so ingrained in a landscape that it is difficult to imagine that area without them. For years, the Three Rivers Female was one of those leopards. Occupying much of the south-eastern parts of Londolozi, any drive into that area had you feeling that you might just come across her strolling down the road. Until tragedy struck.

A confident and curious young leopard, that is nearing independence after a remarkable start to life alongside her resilient mother.
Forced into early independence at 11 months. Despite her small size, she's proven resilient, currently raising a cub in SE Londolozi.
The news of her death a few weeks back was difficult to process. Although she was killed beyond the boundaries of Londolozi, it still felt as though a piece of this place had been lost. So many mornings and afternoons had been spent in her company that the thought of never seeing her again seemed almost impossible. Her passing, however, left something behind, an opportunity for territory.

In the leopard world, vacant territories are often the catalyst for conflict. Neighbouring females may push in, younger leopards may begin exploring, and a period of uncertainty usually follows. But this particular vacancy has unfolded rather differently. Over the last few months, the Tinxiya Female has gradually begun taking over the very territory her mother once occupied. There is something incredibly fitting about this.

What makes this story even more remarkable is the journey that the Three Rivers Female herself endured. When she was only eleven months old, she lost her own mother to lions. At an age when most female cubs are still heavily reliant on their mothers, she was suddenly forced into independence. By all accounts, the odds were stacked against her. Perhaps because of that difficult start, she never grew into a particularly large leopard. Yet what she lacked in size, she more than made up for in resilience. Against all expectations, she carved out a territory for herself, survived, and eventually raised cubs of her own.
Most importantly, she raised the Tinxiya Female. And therein possibly lies her greatest legacy. To see her daughter now confidently moving through the river systems, scent-marking familiar pathways and settling into her mother’s old kingdom feels like the closing of one chapter and the beginning of another. The Three Rivers Female may no longer walk these roads, but her lineage does. There is something poetic about it all.

A young leopard who lost her mother too soon went on to become an exceptional mother herself. She broke the cycle that could so easily have ended her story, and because of that, her daughter now has an opportunity that she never did: the chance to inherit a kingdom rather than fight for one. Nature is often cruel, but every now and then it offers us moments like this. Moments that remind us that legacies do not end with death. Sometimes they simply change shape.
And as the Tinxiya Female begins writing the next chapter of this dynasty, the story of the Three Rivers Female lives on in every step her daughter now takes.
Dear Bryce, thank you for the lovely epitath to the Three Rivers Female. Even as a guest, I found myself very upset upon hearing the news, and rummaging through all my sightings since I first saw her with Tinxiya as a cub in September 24 at Londolozi. What you say is true, and there is a beauty in that. The footsteps of Three Rivers may have already faded in the sand, but they will be filled by the paws of her legacy – Tinxiya – and thus never forgotten.
I too experienced seeing the Three Rivers Female with her cub in September 2024 during my first (not to be my last) Londolozi visit. I echo your thoughts and was distressed to her of her passing. Her daughter is her legacy and I treasure hearing about how she is doing.

Thank you so much for putting up such a interesting and good blog on the life of the Three Rivers female, who was sadly killed by the 2 new mothering lionesses of the Kambula pride’s 8 new cubs and the 2 Gajima males early last month. I know the Three Rivers female was born in April 2016 in a litter of 2 to the late Kikilezi female and Treehouse male, both of whom were sadly killed by the then 2 Southern Avoca male lion brothers at the time. She lost her mother to those lions when she was just 13 months old, and her father to the sane lions as well 3 months later. It is sad that her twin litter mate brother didn’t survive at all, but it was just astonishing to see her miraculously survive to independence and adulthood at such a very young age. Although she didn’t raise and give birth to as many cubs as we had probably hoped she would, it is good that she successfully raised 2 now very fully independent offspring, a male from her first litter and a female from her second litter, to independence well.
At least they’ll be able to carry on her legacy and sire cubs of their own individually to make sure that they do it in memory of their late mother. I’m sure they will want to build as big and successful a legacy as possible for many years to come and go. Though she is so very sadly gone but not and won’t be forgotten, the Three Rivers female will always be fully remembered as a very relaxed, calm, cherished, special and great female leopard to view and watch. She never failed to disappoint anyone with her presence, as she always did it with such elegance, gracefulness and beauty.
But whilst her fully independent son is busy sorting his own priorities out and probably busy patrolling his territory, it will be so interesting to see what her fully independent daughters will do, and how she’ll cope in the future. At just two years old, she is still a bitter young to be mating right now, so I think she’ll have to wait for at least another year or two, before she starts calling for a mate to mate and sire her own very first litter of cubs with. When the time comes for her to mate and if it’s successful, it’ll be so interesting to see how many cubs she will have and where she’ll pick to hide them.
But it’s not just the legacy of the Three Rivers female that will live on, but in also that of her long late mother who was sadly killed over 9 years ago. There are so many very special and highly relaxed young and old male and female leopards that are sadly no longer around there now, but one thing is for sure, they won’t be forgotten and will be remembered by all of those who knew them so well and miss enjoying all of the memorable viewing they had with them all of those long gone years ago. I’m sure some or most of you there will have lots of very good knowledge and memories of all of those male and female leopards who are tragically and sadly no longer around there right now at all. Wouldn’t you? It has been a month and 21 days now since the lifeless body of the Three Rivers female was found dead in the Sand River with lion footprints all around her, but as sad as it is to think of it right now, but I’m sure her 2 tiny cubs will be dead now, as they wouldn’t have survived over a month without any milk, meat, protection and lots of tlc from their highly devoted, patient, tolerant and relaxed mother what so ever. It’ll be down to the young Tinxiya female to do just that when she’s old enough to mate and sire her own cubs eventually. I hope she’ll give birth to a lot more cubs than her late mum did, and raise a lot more of them to independence and adulthood ever so very well and successfully. Àlthough we don’t know yet, but there could well be a possibility that one of her cubs in the future could well be given the very same name as her mum’s mum.

This is a silver lining in an otherwise sad and unfortunate event. I remain hopeful that the Tinxiya female can continue her mother’s legacy, in her natal territory.

I saw her shortly after she had that epic fight with the Nkoveni Female. And she had already recovered from her severe injuries and was feeding on a kill in a tree. That same night we also saw her son.
The following year I saw her with the super cute Tinxiya cub, as a loving mother taking very good care of that young cub.
And this year I saw her trying to hunt, after she had a new litter of cubs. That litter that probably and very sadly died after she got killed.
As you wrote, it is comforting to think of this great leopard and her legacy to her daughter so that her lineage can continue. It’s great that the daughter can take over her mum’s territory now and remain on Londolozi ground.
Bryce, thank you for such a beautiful story post about the Three Rivers female. I saw the title and knew I would cry when I read it. Being the first leopard I saw while at Londolozi in May (after the amazing trackers spending all morning looking for her), she was extra special to me. It broke my heart to hear about losing her only shortly after we returned home. I had already ordered a large wall canvas of a beautiful photo of her, so she will FURever be remembered in our home. I know she was special to all of you there as well, and I hope her daughter carries on her amazing legacy.
A lovely tribute, Bryce. I’ve happy memories of seeing her playing with her brother just weeks before their mom Xidulu was killed, finding her curled up in tall grasses at a neighbor in ‘21, watching her contact calling Tinxiya as a cub and then spending hours with her this past May just weeks before her own passing. Her loss is a difficult one.
Thank you Bryce. I always had a particular soft spot for the 3 Rivers female, having seen her (and her brother) playing with their mother Xidulu. I have many fond memories of her, having been lucky enough to see her on many visits, including my last trip in November. It was wonderful to also see Tinxiya for the lst time, and I’m so pleased to see she’s taking over her mother’s territory.
Hi Bryce, thanks for your story on the Three Rivers Female. I was devastated when I heard that she had been killed by lion on the neighboring grounds. She was one of my favourite females. Just heartbreaking to even think she will never walk the grounds of Londolozi again and play with her beautiful daughter again. Well know her daughter has taken up her territory which is fitting because the lineage carries on.

Hi Bryce, your words are simply perfect. That absolutely exquisite smaller leopard had a lot to endure. First, an independence arrived too soon. Then the frightening fight with the Nkoveni Female, who, as you all know so well, is a sort of dragon when her offspring is in danger. And the weakness of the little Tinxyia Female, whom she helped tenderly as just a mother can. In the end , her sudden loss, the way that had characterised her life, a smaller leopard that endured the hard life. She reminds me the Ndzanzeni female; smaller, exquisite, tough. What a memory. Thank you Bryce.
Thank you Bryce for this lovely tribute and reminder of Three Rivers female’s legacy. She touched so many hearts, staff and guests, who knew her story and felt compelled to cheer and look out for her. Raising cubs isn’t easy yet she provided food, safety and taught her son and daughter the skills needed to survive on their own. So she will be missed, but she will live on through her daughter in the territory she so carefully developed, her paw prints now covered by Tinxiyas, but her story will never disappear.

Hi Bryce. Do you know who is the father of the Tinxiya female is? She looks like quite a large boned lady.
Any word about her two cubs? If they survived? We saw one of the cubs in early June.
