I must start off by wishing you all a Merry Christmas. I trust that you had a wonderful day and that you were surrounded by friends, family and loved ones. As a wildlife photography fanatic I am continually seeking new ways to shoot and portray images in nature. One quite exciting idea that I have [...]

A stone’s throw from where the landrovers leave for game drive ( Varty Camp car park): a Green Backed Heron sits on her nest. Here on the north eastern corner of Camp Dam she has begun the annual spring ritual of rearing young. This time, however, it’s different because she’s let us in on the [...]

The 24th of September is South Africa’s National Heritage Day. It is a day which encourages South Africans across the spectrum to celebrate the rich and diverse heritage on which our country exists. There are many things to celebrate from the cultural traditions and historical buildings to the unspoiled wilderness making this day a significant event in every South African’s calender. But the bigger question that I am usually asked by my guests is what South Africa is really like at the moment….

Young Mxabene Leopard Attempts First Hunt

September 22, 2009

The Following Video May Offend Sensitive Viewers

The Mxabene female’s 10 month old cub had been found alone, sitting atop a dry, dusty termite mound. He was exuding a sense of bravado that is so typical of young male leopards. His steely gaze was only interrupted by the flicking of his ears and rustling of his coat. It was to be a significant afternoon for him. In the space of a few hours he would demonstrate his physical prowess and deadly instincts.

South African Cricket Captain, Graeme Smith, Opens Londolozi’s Community Based Cricket Net

September 10, 2009

South African Cricket Captain, Graeme Smith, stayed at Londolozi over the weekend to open our recently constructed cricket net. The top cricketers from Sam Nzima School, in the neighbouring community of Lillydale, were invited to participate in an hour long coaching session with Graeme. Once the captain had cut the ribbon to open the net, the children (and some over enthusiastic Londolozi rangers) were given the opportunity to bowl at one of the world’s premier batsmen. Londolozi is hugely grateful to Graeme for giving of his time in the baking lowveld sun to help us unearth our local talent.

The Tsalala Pride fights amongst each other for food

August 27, 2009

A snort from an impala gave away the presence of lion. Baboons went berserk and raced for safety in any tree available as one lioness charged into the previously peaceful scene. The racket caused by the baboons sent the antelope in all directions and this galvanized the 2 remaining lionesses into action. In a split second one lioness had grabbed a young female neatly by the throat and the other plucked a ram from the air and dumped it to the ground. She hadn’t bothered with the throat but rather paralyzed it with a bite to the back.
She dragged this with supreme strength past the vehicle and down into a donga. We worked our vehicle in there and watched as 8 cubs began the noisy battle for a meal.

20:20 – A new vision in the bush

August 21, 2009

A few months ago, Londolozi received a visit from an eye doctor. I know I should be careful with a statement like this – because there is a significant difference between ophthalmologists and optometrists, but I didn’t bother to have my eyes tested and so I can’t verify which of the specialists we had. Anyway, several of the staff here are now happily bespectacled and some have even gone for corrective laser surgery and for now at least – we are all seeing a little better.
