Love this blog. I have always been fond of Hamerkop’s. It is just one of those birds that you can be sure of seeing at a river or waterhole. Interesting that they accumulate human “artifacts” and incorporate it in their nests.

Well….I’ve never heard of a bird that was a true “junk collector” AND still holds such a powerful occult history with certain tribes. What a fascinating bird! James, you made us realize that something as plain looking as the brown Hamerkop actually leads a interesting kleptomaniac life, cobra’s aside, while continuing to striking fear in some. At my dinner table, you won’t be hearing me say, “Please pass the Hamerkop. You know it tastes like “chicken!” lol …
BAM! ⚡️

Thank you, James. A most interesting and informative article about Hammerkops! Wendy M

Who would have thought this plain brown bird has such an incredible backstory!! I don’t know if I’ve ever seen one, but I’ll be on the lookout the next time I’m there.
Your description of the nest decorations in Zimbabwe was crazy – keep your possession’s out of their line of sight…….. fascinating blog.
