on The Coconut Scented Sage: Why Do Plants Smell?

Join the conversationJoin the conversation

So true! I wish I could smell the messages from those lovely plants and flowers! I recently read about a research, according to which plants emit clicking sounds when distressed (cut or excessive exposure to water for example). T
In particular tomatoes and tobacco plants were used for the experiments, but surely all vegetation uses this mean through their xylemas. There’s a lot to learn from plants and we are just beginning I suppose…

Jess, your blog today is very informative. The different aromas produced by different plants attracting different birds, insects and animals, nature is really unique and very adaptive. Thanks for your insights.

Hi Jess,
I loved your article and know the scents you were highlighting, especially the coconut scented sage, my favorite. Taking a drive, closing your eyes and letting your senses wander is one of the gifts of a drive. I’m completely in sync with the importance of balance in nature and how the species not only interact with one another but are essential to the survival of each other, and importantly, us. I’ve taken care to include species of flowering plants throughout my yard to encourage the bees, ladybugs, good spiders, and hummingbirds. My favorite is the lavender that I can smell every time I pass it as well as my herb garden. Enjoy your winter days ahead and go hug a leadwood for me!!

Interesting read Jess and I am sure the smell of the different fragrances make it even more special being right there in the bush next to them.

Interesting article Jess. I had no idea that moths and bats pollinated flowers.

Thank you Jess, that’s really interesting. When I come back in November I’ll have to ask Alfie to find me some of the coconut-scented sage!
