This week we see that the laws of the wild have no mercy as we go from one surprise to another. Starting off with a gorgeous sighing of the Nhlanguleni Female as she patiently watches a herd of impalas hoping for an opportunity to try to hunt one. Successfully stalking and getting herself into the perfect position all she can do is wait in the hope that the impalas walk right past her. From there on it is an immense battle of athleticism and strength to over-power an antelope much heavier than her.
Patience sure pays off for her but fortune is not in her favour from there on. Watch until the end to see one surprise unfold after the other. While exciting, this week’s video may not be for sensitive viewers.

Initially skittish she spent a lot of time in the Sand River, now relaxed she makes up the majority of leopard viewing west of camp.

Around July I watched a video about rise and fall of mapogo colation. From what I understood: this coaltion was and maybe still is the most famous coaltion of lion and I saw they were located around sabi sand.
I made some research to try to find kind of forum or blog about this reserve because and I was interesting in seeing the nature in real time (lions but not only…. leopard, hyenas, cheetah….) It is with pleasure that I read each week some artciles here with some storytelling (example: tsalala pride).
It enables us to be aware of rise and fall of pride/coaltion from the other side of the planet 🙂
If it wasn’t for the Mapogo’s I wouldn’t be here. I fell in love with their story and if it wasn’t for them I wouldn’t have learned to appreciate lions in general so much.
Especially them but I do what I can to learn all about all the lion coalitions from Sabi Sands, past and present.
Rangers and the like will probably be sick of hearing about them but theirs no denying their impact and they will have gained so much customers from them alone. They have been brought up in conversation on Wild Earth 2 or 3 times in the last 6 weeks when the last one died in 2013. They truly are the undisputed kings of Sabi Sands.

The Mapogo were an impressive coalition, along with many other lions that have been viewed around here. We post daily blogs on this website and then every Sunday there is a video of something that has happened here at Londolozi.
Sean, what an encounter with the leopard, hyenas, and lions. The survival of the fittest or strongest is evident for sure.

And what bad luck for the Nhlanguleni female to lose her hard earned meal.
It is sad that this Impala had to die. Nature is really not for sensitive nerves in some cases.
However, how exciting that the hyenas arrived on the spot so fast and in such numbers that the leopard had no chance at all. And as the cherry on top of it all the arrival of the lions chasing the hyenas away.
It must be really hard for a leopard having to watch from a distance how her nice meal was devoured by others in only a few minutes. She could have fed on this ram for days if she had had the chance to drag it up into a tree.

OMG, that was both an amazing and heartbreaking video. The laws of nature are cruel at times, but as a believer in karma, Nhlanguleni will succeed in catching another meal. She was brilliant in bringing that large ram down, as I’m sure he weighed more than her but those jaws and paws…. The ending was an even bigger surprise – the Ntsevu racing in to claim the remains, but even more cheeky was the lioness who claimed a rib section for herself! Alas, eventually she had to share. Terrific episode this week Sean!!

Absolutely incredible to see the kill from the Nhlanguleni female, just a pity she could not even get a taste on the kill before the hyenas came and stole it from her. Just goes to show anything is possible in the wild. I felt sorry for her hard earned kill going to the thieves of the bush.
Leopards will never ever cease to amaze me. Wow! Just love Nhlanguleni!
