What a cool experience! I think I would have felt guilty walking away without offering it a reward, but raiding a hive, unprepared without the proper gear sounds like a recipe for disaster.

Thanks Matt, that is truly astonishing! But surely the bird would be disappointed hat you didn’t raid the hive for him? – after all that was the whole point of leading you there.

Exactly my question! I hope you did!

Great episode, but I wonder if you answer the Honeyguide by “raiding the hive” so the bird can eat?

A really wonderful blog, Matt.
It sounds like a miracle that humans can just follow a small bird and get honey as a reward. What did. you do? Did you reward him with some beeswax and larvae for his pain?
I would have loved to be there and have this extraordinary experience

Wow Matt, what an experience!

Hi Matt, you always get a very peculiar and absolutely beautiful connection between plants and animals, a greater Honeyguide, and the mention of the honeybadger… thank you for this profound and interesting article!

This is so cool!! What a amazing gift to have experienced what you thought was only folklore!

Well-told story, Matt – I was walking along with you as the honeyguide led the way! I’d heard about these birds but have never experienced what you did that day. Was he rewarded for his efforts thereby reinforcing that DNA-driven behavior?

Thanks for your fascinating post Matt highlighting so many truths about humans and nature, pointedly that we are always IN nature, not OUT of it. A question – did you reward this Honeyglide with a beeswax and larvae meal after it led you to the hive?? I’m guessing not, but it would be another great story if you did…

Matt, this is so beautiful. Thank you for the reminders. And a gorgeous picture of the bee! 💜

Hi Matt, what a wonderful way to have the Greater Honeyguide show you were the Honey is. Shame I suppose you could not give him any reward as the bees will attack you. Yes you are absolutely right Matt, we must return to nature and live each day as if it your last.
