on Grey Herons: When the Watchers Gather

Hi Chris, I’m over the hills about the subject of your blog edition! I know them well, in a co- study about other animals that live close to water there were grey herons too. Then I found a nest upon a large tree and visited the area every day to see the development. I also found a solitary fisher upon sea rocks nearby. They look very adaptable. And are imposing birds. The first picture is mesmerising. To win a competition… absolutely great!

The similarity between your Grey Herons and North American Great Blue Herons makes me wonder if they shared a common ancestor, or if this is another case of evolution creating similar traits in various species that occupy the same niche on separate continents? Thanks for sharing pictures of them on the nest and with chicks, that’s not something we see often.

Thanks, Chris for this interesting blog on Grey Herons and the beautiful photos!
I remember those noisy nests built around the causeway very well. Full of life with these chicks.
It’s always great to watch birds and especially these big ones build their nests and feed their young ones.

Hi Chris, thanks for these beautiful images of the Great Herons. They are beautiful birds with their long legs. Good to know that both parents help feed the chick’s.
