We went back to the wild dog den.
Last week, three pups. This week a few more surprises were waiting at the entrance that we did not see coming.
There is also a giraffe calf in this episode that stopped me in my tracks. Probably twenty-four hours old when we found it, stumbling around in the last of the afternoon light. And some footage from 2019 I have never shared on this channel; old, poorly filmed, but showing something I have only witnessed once in ten years out here.
The river. The elephants. A large male leopard on a termite mound when I was looking for someone else entirely.
And an owl who looked at us like we were the ones who needed to explain ourselves.
Press play. Come along for the ride.
Don’t forget to subscribe if you haven’t already.
An impressive male, appearing as a rising force in the north. Making a name for himself by pushing other males out.
This episode was chock full of cute youngsters: The wild dog pups, the baby giraffes, and your own kiddos! Five pups is exciting. Let’s hope they all make it. Thank you for sharing the older footage of the giraffe giving birth, too. The quality looked fine to my non-expert eyes. What a magical scene to have witnessed.
Hi Sean. Opposite to the ones that are canids-only orientated, I was moved by the birth of a giraffe calf. It’s a true miracle a birth in the wilderness, and even more from such a height! Touching. The two human cubs on your vehicle looking at a leopard dad… that’s fantastic, the interaction between the two species! I remember several facts of wild animals protecting human children. A great video! Inspiring.
There may be just 5 wobbly pups in the wild dog den, but I had to laugh as the four adults were kept busy trying to corral them as they bumbled about after nursing. They do have a long road ahead of them as there are so many predators in the area so fingers crossed some will make it to adulthood and bolster the size of this pack.
It was sweet to see the giraffe calf silhouetted with its mom after the sun set, but even better was your footage showing the birth of a giraffe – the animal world is amazing inasmuch as there is no time to learn to sit, crawl or walk – an Impala lamb is born and within minutes it is on its feet suckling from its mother. I have footage from a video camera I used several years ago, when I thought it would be fun to shoot with both a dslr and video camera whilst on safari ( what was I thinking?!). We were following a Tsessebe that was in the process of giving birth whilst running as we could see the legs of the calf and ultimately found her and the calf just after she dropped it. Watching the process from after birth to standing was incredible!
It was fantastic to see Seb and Olivia with you during your drive to the north, crossing at my favorite place, Finfoot. And then to see the Hlambela male was truly a bonus. He is a gorgeous male. Your little ones must have been thrilled with that sighting! Thanks Sean for another varied and exciting virtual safari.
Sean: This weeks’ recap brought a huge smile. We had the incredible fortune of seeing and hearing the squeals of the ‘five’ denning pups during the first week of September. We know that was a BIG find and treat. And, we also saw the baby giraffe with its mom during our traversing. The ride through Finfoot to the north was not as productive as your Leopard sighting. I’ve never been to Londolozi when there has bee so much water flowing. I brought back oh so many memories of what we did see. And are grateful to Chris and Tsepho who teamed up with others to find the leopards we did see. Already thinking about my next visit!.
Thanks, Sean, for this lovely video! Your kids are so cute!
What good news that there are 5 wild dog pups. Let’s hope that they will survive and become beautiful adult dogs. They are also so cute tumbling over each other and fighting to get to their mum’s milk.
The Little Giraffe is also extremely cute. It really is amazing how these herbivores can get up and even walk around only a few minutes after being born. This is always the moste amazing thing nature presents us with, for me.
And the owl is so beautiful and calm and nice looking down on these humans down there.
Lovely!
OMG Sean…your little munchkins!!! They are precious! You need to have more bring your kids to work days! How wonderful for all of you! This was such a great safari…so peaceful allowing us to watch the beauty…would have been a perfect Mother’s Day safari w/ all the babies (including yours)! Cheers!
Hi Sean your two little ones are so sweet and well behaved. Can’t believe they have grown up so quickly. That is good news that there are know 5 wild dog pups. They are quite noisy and very cute. The baby giraffe you saw with it’s Mom is so precious. Thanks for the video of the birth of the baby giraffe taken a while back. Shame they have to be up and walking and even running in a short while because there are predators everywhere. Beautiful video this week thanks Sean.
The wild dog’s pups are so cute and vulnerable. One tends to forget how brutal the wild can be. In a year or two, they will be hunting… When watching a giraffe give birth, one hopes there are no predators around. Thank you for a special virtual safari. Chris
