Let me set the scene.
Two leopards. Dense thicket. The female crouched low, the male mounting, biting down on the nape of her neck. Ten seconds of snarling, growling chaos. Then an explosive dismount, a swipe of claws, and the female spinning to face the male with what can only be described as a look that would make most people reconsider their life choices. And then, roughly twenty minutes later, they do it again, and again, and again.
This carries on for four to five days.
I have watched this more times than I can count, and it never stops being one of the more extraordinary things the bush produces. On the surface, it looks like pure aggression. Two animals that would be perfectly content to never see each other under normal circumstances, suddenly locked into this bizarre, volatile, relentless cycle. But scratch the surface and what you find underneath is one of the most precisely engineered reproductive systems in the mammal world.
Why it starts with her
The female initiates. Always. Through a behaviour called lordosis, she lowers the front of her body, raises her hindquarters, and presents herself. She may rub against the male, roll in front of him, call to him. The male, for all his size and authority in any other context, is essentially waiting to be invited.
This matters because a female leopard is not always fertile. She comes into oestrus, or what most people call being “in heat”, for roughly five to seven days, every two to three months. If she has successfully raised a litter to near-independence, the return to oestrus happens as the metabolic and hormonal demands of motherhood ease off. If she loses a litter, that process can accelerate dramatically; her body can reset within as little as two weeks, an adaptation that is brutal in its efficiency and absolutely critical for a solitary predator whose reproductive window is already narrow.
Four chances per year, roughly, to fall pregnant. That is the budget. Every oestrus cycle that passes without conception is a quarter of a year’s reproductive potential gone.
The barbed question
Here is where the biology gets genuinely strange.
A female leopard does not ovulate on a regular hormonal cycle the way a human does. She is what scientists call an induced ovulator, meaning she does not release an egg until mating has actually occurred several times. The physical act itself is what triggers ovulation. Without it, no egg. No egg, no pregnancy. The system simply waits.
The mechanism behind this is pain.
The male’s penis is barbed, covered in small, backwards-facing spines made of keratin. During the act of mating, these are largely passive. But on withdrawal, they drag against the female’s reproductive tract, causing what is clearly (judging by her reaction) significant discomfort. This stimulus triggers a hormonal cascade: a surge of luteinising hormone that stimulates the ovaries to release an egg.
The evolutionary logic is sound, even if the experience sounds deeply unpleasant. In a solitary species where encounters between males and females are infrequent, tying ovulation to the act of mating itself guarantees that when the conditions are right- the right male, the right moment– the reproductive machinery fires. There is no wasted egg sitting around hoping a male turns up. The system is demand-driven, not supply-driven.
A few other cats share this adaptation. Lions. Tigers. Domestic cats, which is why a queen in heat becomes quite so persistently vocal and why breeders manage their timings carefully. The barb is not unique to leopards. But in a solitary animal whose encounters with suitable males are separated by large territories and long gaps, the adaptation is arguably most critical.
Why four days?
Here is the part that most people do not fully appreciate. A single mating bout is not enough.
Ovulation in induced ovulators requires a threshold of stimulation to occur reliably. One or two matings may not be sufficient. Repeated mating over multiple days raises both the certainty of ovulation and the likelihood of fertilisation. In lions, researchers have recorded upwards of 200 mating bouts over a three-day period. Leopards are in similar territory.

Twenty minutes between bouts, across four to five days, works out to a lot of repetitions. The male barely eats during this period. Neither does the female. Both are running on what must be an extraordinary combination of hormonal drive and stubbornness.
But there is something else happening during those four to five days that goes beyond the mechanics of fertilisation. As was written about in the piece on male territorial behaviour, the extended mating period is also a dominance proof. A male who is displaced mid-courtship by a rival has failed to demonstrate the one thing a female most needs from him: the ability to hold his ground. If he cannot maintain access to her through the full cycle, the question of whether his territory, and his cubs, will be protected after she gives birth answers itself. The female is not simply mating. She is assessing. The days are long, the conditions are uncomfortable, and the male who is still there at the end of it is the male worth investing in.
What happens next
After mating, the male and female separate almost immediately. There is no pair bond, no cooperative parenting, no continued association. The male returns to his territory. The female returns to hers. If fertilisation has occurred, she will carry the pregnancy for roughly 95 to 105 days (just over three months) before giving birth, alone, in a den she has already scouted and prepared.
The male will have very little to do with those cubs. In fact, his presence near the den would be a threat rather than a reassurance in the early days, which is why females are so careful about where they den and how much scent they leave near it. The same biology that drove him to mate with her would drive him to kill unrelated cubs if he encountered them. His own cubs are safe. Anything he cannot identify as his is not.
This is the architecture of solitary reproduction. No help, no shared load, no second adult to cover the hunt while the other watches the den. The female carries all of it: the pregnancy, the birth, the first weeks when the cubs are helpless, and she must still hunt to feed herself, the constant vigilance. What looks like a ten-second event in the thicket is the opening move in a process that will consume at least the next eighteen months of her life.
Ten seconds. Four days. Three months. Eighteen months.
All in service of the same outcome: the next generation making it through.
I find it genuinely extraordinary every time I think about it. And I have had a lot of time to think about it, sitting in a vehicle watching two leopards stare at each other from opposite sides of a bush, twenty minutes into what is apparently mandatory waiting time between rounds.
The bush, it turns out, runs on a very specific schedule.

The closest I came to seeing it was in September 24 at Londolozi when the Xinkhova female presented herself to the Xitsalala male and he was not interested. She climbed a small tree directly above him, did all her moves, then the branch broke and a short vicious scuffle broke out between them after that. I don’t know if eventually they did or did not mate..

Thanks Eric. Good question, and yes it does. Cheetahs are induced ovulators as well, so mating is what triggers the egg release, same as the leopards. There’s an odd extra twist with them, though: a specific male call, a sort of stutter bark, is thought to help kick the female’s hormones into gear before mating even happens. Same broad system, slightly different wiring.

Back in 2012 I saw the Marthly male mating with Mashaba multiple times. Around 100 days later Nkoveni was born. I know it’s extremely unlikely, but I like to think I saw her being conceived!

As for 2012, the timing certainly lines up with a roughly 100-day gestation, so I love that you like to think you were there for the very beginning. Terrific post Sean covering the mating ritual in the leopard domain. I’ve been fortunate to witness both leopards and lions mating, and it seems that there is a more aggressive dismount between leopards, but I don’t have a lot of experience observing this behavior. There definitely seems to be more flirtatious behavior prior to mating by female leopards…..animal behavior is truly fascinating and the more I learn, the more I want to know.

Whether the dismount is genuinely rougher in leopards than lions I couldn’t say for certain, but it certainly looks that way from the vehicle.

And then when I learned that female leopards will often seek out other males to mate with so as to ensure the safety of her future cubs, I’m amazed all over again. The bush is wondrous indeed!
Thank you Mary Beth. That’s a good one to raise. Mating with more than one male is thought to muddy the paternity waters, so a male is less likely to kill cubs that might be his own. It’s a clever bit of insurance in a world where males will kill cubs they don’t recognise. The more you dig into it, the more astonishing it gets.
Hi Sean thank you for describing the mating procedure for us in detail. Very interesting and seemingly very time bound over the 4 days and mating every 20 seconds sounds like a lot, but as you say there are reasons for that. The female seems to get hurt every time he has finished, to be understood with the detail you explained. I have also learnt that some females mate with different males to make sure her cubs will safe after birth, seemingly the two males thinking the cubs are his.
