Your safari trip to Londolozi is booked, and now it’s time to pack! For first-timers, knowing what to bring can be tricky. Don’t worry, though—I’ve curated a list of five must-have items for an unforgettable African safari experience.
1. A Pair of Binoculars
Having a pair of binoculars with you on your safari is a must. Whether you’re relaxing on your private deck scanning the horizon for wildlife, or out on a game drive exploring the wilderness, a pair of binoculars will be convenient. Given the expansive landscapes, wildlife can sometimes be far from view. That’s where binoculars become essential, allowing you to zoom in and witness all the action up close.
Your guide will have binoculars on hand, but having your own ensures you won’t miss a moment of the action. Sharing might mean missing out on thrilling sightings. So, it’s wise to bring your own. Concerned about luggage weight? Don’t worry! You can always rent binoculars from our onsite Photographic Studio.
2. Sun Protection
During your safari, you’ll spend ample time outdoors, whether it’s sitting on the deck enjoying the warmth of the African sun, or on a game drive. The African sun’s rays can be intense, even during the winter months. Be sure to pack sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses. These essentials will allow you to fully enjoy your safari adventure.
When it comes to sun protection, there’s no reason for it to lack excitement. With plenty of stylish options in hats and sunglasses, you can easily elevate your safari chic look. From luxurious leather wide-brimmed hats to classic aviators and elegant tortoiseshell frames, the choices are endless. Be sure to check out our Londolozi Safari Boutique for a variety of hat and sunglass options that perfectly blend fashion with functionality.
3. A Camera or Smartphone
Capture the magic of your safari adventure by bringing along a camera or smartphone. Whether you choose to bring your professional camera gear for stunning wildlife shots or use your smartphone to capture beautiful moments, you’ll treasure these memories for a lifetime. Don’t feel like travelling with bulky camera equipment? Our photographic studio has plenty of state-of-the-art camera bodies and lenses for you to rent during your stay.
4. Comfortable Footwear
Comfortable footwear is essential for a safari trip. While at Londolozi, you won’t encounter rugged terrain, but for the occasional walk around camp or when you’re out on safari having your morning coffee, having comfortable shoes is wise. Whether it’s sneakers, boots (a popular choice for safaris), or a South African shoe known as “veldskoen” (or “vellies”), which you’ll notice many of our staff members wear – a classic safari shoe. While a comfy pair of sandals is great for daytime due to the heat, closed shoes are recommended for nighttime and on game drive.
5. A Good Book
We highly recommend making the most of your downtime during your safari trip by bringing along your favourite book. All of our rooms and deck areas hold a spread of books like Full Circle by Dave Varty, Cathedral of the Wild by Boyd Varty, and our Lonodlozi Impact Journey so that you can explore the 100-year story of Londolozi. Whether you’re relaxing in your chalet, enjoying coffee on our main deck, or lounging by the pool, it’s the perfect peaceful environment to lose yourself in a good book. It’s also the perfect time for journaling; nature’s tranquillity is ideal for jotting down thoughts, moments, and memories. Bringing along wildlife and bird books is also a great idea, as you’re surrounded by these fascinating creatures, and gaining extra knowledge will definitely enhance the safari experience.
With these essential items packed and ready, you’ll be fully prepared for your trip to Londolozi. We have also collated a packing list according to the different seasons, be sure to read this blog for more tips on what to pack for your next African safari.
I’d love to know, what are some of your must-haves to pack with you on safari?
Great tips Megan.
Thank you, William!
Thanks Megan, These are great tips and we can’t wait to come back again!
Thanks, Michael and Terri! We’re looking forward to your return!
Megan you have everything covered for a trip to Londolozi. Guests traveling from overseas might want to rather hire photography equipment as not to have to much luggage. The sun here is extremely hot and we need to take prevention. Good idea Megan to prepare the guests for what to take with for their safari holiday.
Thank you, Valmai!
Good article, Megan, on what to bring with you as a guest.
My most important item is certainly my camera. Of course, at Londolozi one can hire one, but at other places it’s not possible. So taking photos and/ or making videos is very important for me. Then, of course, sun lotion and a head.
During the cold weeks. also some warm wear, a warm hat a.s.o. And a good book. I think nearly every camp has some bird and mammal books which the guests may use.
Anyway, great tips!
Thank you, Christa! Packing your camera is definitely a must for capturing those special moments on safari.
