For those that have visited us or been reading our blogs, you might recognise Jordan Odams. After two years of Camp Management and many camps later, we thought we would pick Jordan’s brain about life in the Londolozi Camps and get some inside tips from her. Jordan also takes us through the unique features of Pioneer Camp – making it the perfect safari private villa.
How long have you been a Camp Manager at Londolozi and what camps have you worked at?
I have been a camp manager for almost two years now. It’ll be two years in December. I was actually lucky enough to have arrived here at a time where there was a bunch of changes and so I have had the opportunity to work at every camp here which is such an advantage as I’ve worked many different people.
What wildlife sightings have you seen from the Camp Decks?
From the Camp Decks, around lunch time usually, I’ve seen many herds of elephants which is always beautiful. I have seen giraffes mating from the Varty Camp Deck which was something I’d never seen before so that was incredible! My favourite sighting would have to be when I was working at Varty Camp, I saw a leopard outside the fence – he was relaxed which was so amazing to see as he stuck around for a while.
What do you love most about Pioneer Camp as a Safari Private Villa and what makes it a unique camp?
What I love most about Pioneer Camp is the versatility of the camp. As, most of the time, it is booked out by an exclusive group, so you really have so much freedom to have fun with the space. Themed nights in various dinner locations is something I love to do the most. Whether it being a change in decor, change in cuisine or just the addition of subtle music it really does add a twist to your usual evenings. It’s such fun to be able to tailor the evenings specifically to the guests – and really see them getting involved and having fun with it.What makes Pioneer Camp unique will have to be the open plan kitchen making it a Safari Private Villa. This is a feature that is only seen at Pioneer and it is so great as you are able to watch the chefs cook your food for you and you are able to get involved and chat to them directly which always ends in many laughs and such a homey feeling.
What kinds of vacations/holidays would be suited at this camp?
Definitely family holidays due to the private villa feel of the camp. Pioneer is the perfect camp for a family that just want some quality time together, whether that be lounging by the big pioneer camp pool or playing board games on the deck. There is so much freedom at Pioneer Camp, so if the family has a different sort of schedule it’s not a problem at all as we tailor whatever you need to you. Two of the three rooms at pioneer are connected and so you are never too far from each other which is a great added bonus.
What is your favourite lunch option at the moment?
This is an easy answer for me. Without a doubt the crispy chicken bao buns. Crispy chicken, Siracha aioli, coleslaw and ginger all perfectly sitting in a soft steamed bun, what more could you ask for really?
If you had to choose – would you choose dinner on the deck or in the boma?
This is a tricky one as both locations are so romantic in the evenings with dozens of lanterns and tea lights making it come alive. If I had to choose I’d say the boma solely due to the fact that you are sitting outside, under a million stars in the African bush. Where else would you be able to get this experience? There is a large fire in the centre creating that nostalgic feeling that everyone can relate to and sitting around that fire with a glass of red in your hand is a beautiful way to end your day.
When do you think the best time of year to visit Londolozi is?
In my opinion the winter months are the most beautiful, around June to August. The crisp mornings often warm up during the day and then it gets colder in the evenings providing you with the best of both worlds. You get to experience the cold, which makes your morning coffee stop more rewarding, and you might even be able to have a dip in your plunge pool around mid day so you really get to experience it all in Winter.
What do you love most about life at Londolozi?
There are too many answers to this question running through my head. If I had to pick just one I would have to say working with the most incredible people from all walks of life. My walk to Pioneer Camp every morning is littered with big smiles and “good mornings” from every person. It’s the atmosphere I feel when everyone around you is happy to be here and happy to work it makes your day that much more enjoyable. You can walk into any camp or any department and everyone is happy to see you and people genuinely care about you which is something you won’t receive in every job. Working alongside some of my best friends every day is like a dream.
