I remember seeing this bird for the first time. I was in the north of the Kruger with one of South Africa’s leading trails guides and top birders, and he suddenly heard it fly over calling and immediately broke into a run. Seeing him toss the mantra “Only food runs in the bush!” out the window just to try catch a glimpse of this bird made me realise what a special sighting it was.
We do see them here from time to time but not often. Knowing their call is the best way to find them; it carries far and is very distinctive.
We’ll reveal the answer in this Friday’s Week in Pictures..
Good luck!
No idea. Can’t wait for the answer.
One of the cuckoos, possibly thick billed
James, I think it is hawk🤗
My guess is The African Hawk-Eagle.
Come on, us city folk aren’t patient enough to wait a whole days 🙂
Thick-billed cuckoo
Gribble’s beige and taupe dawn hawk?
Banded snake eagle?
Auger buzzard?
I am looking forward to your solution.
It’s a Thick-billed Cuckoo. One that’s on my list to see…
Hi James. Getting very strong Cucko vibes from the head, had a look at my book, and am confident on a Thick-billed cuckoo?
Can’t decide, but will chance a Chanting Goshawk 🙃😏
I’m sure I’ll be terribly wrong but is it a black sparrowhawk?
Defintely a cuckoo, I’d say either a jacobin or a thick-billed cuckoo (money is on the former)
Thick Billed Cuckoo
Late to the party and already saw the answer, so no comment here!
