The Week in Pictures # 28

Sometimes when guests ask, ‘When is the best time of the year to come to Londolozi?’, my response is that if you are a photographer, and interested in the big mammals, then winter is preferable. The dry weather provides clear skies, excellent light, and less dense vegetation to block the view. This week, however, I [...]

Spring has sprung and the bush is changing. The evenings are becoming balmy, the Jackalberry trees are shedding their leaves making room for new growth, the Knobthorns are in full flower, and the migratory bird species are returning. This week we observed this metamorphosis along with the resulting adaptive behaviours of the animals, and had one particularly emotional and intense sighting which embraced the circle of life in a different way…

The Week in Pictures # 9

This past week I didn’t spend as much time on traditional safari but rather driving the specialised Photographic Vehicle, which meant that we were able to stay out in the bush all day, patiently spending large amounts of time with various animals. Our guests were particularly keen birders, and therefore in addition to tracking the usual suspects like the Sparta lions and various leopards, we had the privilege of being able to sit in great birding spots to enjoy the view and hone our bird photography skills – in my mind the most difficult animals to photograph. The three days we spent on the Photographic Vehicle came to its pinnacle on the final night when we discovered a new access to the den site of the younger Tsalala cubs. We spent a few breathtaking moments as these youngsters curiously approached us… see for yourself!

An Elephant Birth for an Elephant Whisperer

Martha Beck must have a strange attraction for elephants. The last time she was at Londolozi she had an interesting conversation with our ‘resident’ bull (Nightshift) and this time around she watched an elephant cow give birth in the Sand River right beneath her room. Whatever this attraction is, we don’t mind as it allows us to gain greater insight into the lives of elephants and enhance our already respectful relationships with them…

An Elephant Connection

February 19, 2010

Gently sauntering across grassy plains and threading her way through skeletons of archaic Ebonys, the elephant cow came closer to our stationary position. She seemed intrigued by our presence and her curiosity was evident. In a round about manner the cow drew closer still and then stopped just shy of the vehicle. Happy World Wetlands Day

February 2, 2010

I am of the belief that elephants originated from water. Their mammoth sized bodies are so suited to bobbing in the ocean and their thick leathery hide receptive to the gentle touch of it. It was only when they moved onto dry land did their skin wrinkle and their trunks grow in order that they may eat.
We may never know if this is true or not, but I find the thought fascinating still, rather enchanting as a matter of fact. When I look at elephants I can’t deny it in my mind. These animals were born for water. They were meant to be engulfed in the fluid embrace of aquatic life and they were meant to spend a portion of every day just playing in it. The Difference between Elephants and Humans

January 26, 2010

Elephants do not have a choice about the impact of their existence. They destroy plants and trees for things that could be of benefit, trample water sources into muddy pools and create long winding trails that stamp out any form of growth. They do this so that they can function as elephants. They need to eat a large amounts to sustain their nutrition levels, they need to drink massive amounts in order to hydrate themselves and they need to wander so that they can continually find fertile new land on which to impact their change.
