My jaw dropped when I saw the elephant bull. Big and graceful, he was astounding. There was, however, something more….an additional feature that really spoke to me. He turned his body around to face me and there they were: Tusks. He was not merely an elephant bull, he was a tusker. A remaining descendant of a great African lineage.
His predecessors were like him and once roamed abundantly throughout the continent. Now, they are scarce to find. Their bloodline continues however, and with it bulls such as this. Majestic, towering and adorned with ivory sculptures.
Thick set and undulating upwards, the tusks were beautiful. Marred only by nature’s paintbox, the dusty brown wash gave an ethereal effect. They seemed more like his decorations than actual weaponry…or perhaps it was just his demeanor.
Wisdom was speaking through this bull. Though he was such an impressive size, he only presented a calm, lumbering grace. He was not phased by our presence around him, nor by the hyaena that came to investigate. His worn eyes had seen this situation many times before. He didn’t need to show off. He didn’t need to throw his weight around. He just needed to be himself. And all that required, was finding another morsel to eat.
