There is a particular quiet that settles over Londolozi in the minutes before the vehicles leave camp for the morning game drive. The light is still soft and grey, a francolin calls from somewhere along the riverbank, and for a moment nobody quite speaks. We look out at the land and, almost without noticing, find ourselves looking inward too.
For a hundred years, this has been one of the quieter gifts of this place. People arrive for the leopards, the lions and the wide Sabi Sand sky, and they leave carrying something harder to name. A little more stillness. A clearer sense of who they are. The feeling of belonging to something far greater than themselves.
It is this feeling that sits at the heart of Within & Beyond, a new collaboration between Londolozi and Cape Town fine jewellery designer Taz Watson.
A friendship that became something beautiful
Within & Beyond started long before anyone knew it would be a collection. It started with a childhood friendship between Taz Watson and Chloe Bradley, now Chloe Varty. The two have known each other for as long as either can remember, growing up with a shared love of creativity, beauty, self-expression and the wild places of Africa.
Taz grew up in a family with a deep love of African gemstones. Today she is a GIA-trained, third-generation gemologist, and over the years she has found her own way of making jewellery that carries more than beauty alone. Her pieces hold meaning, sentiment and story, and she believes that if a piece of jewellery makes you feel something, it will stay with you for a lifetime.
When Chloe arrived at Londolozi, that friendship found a new landscape. A decorator, stylist and Enneagram-informed coach, Chloe has become increasingly interested in how our surroundings shape the way we feel: how spaces, objects, colour and texture can shift our mood, our energy and our experience within the body.
The places that hold us
At Londolozi, Chloe began spending time with Shan Varty and Bronwyn Varty-Laburn, two women whose lives have been deeply intertwined with this land.
Shan, often described as the mother of Londolozi, has spent a lifetime knowing, loving and protecting the sacred places scattered across the reserve. Over generations, certain trees, rocky outcrops, river crossings and quiet corners have become places of contemplation, ceremony and reflection. They are sacred not because anyone declared them so, but because of what people have experienced and remembered there.
Bronwyn was born into this wilderness and has spent much of her life exploring the relationship between the natural world and the human spirit. Through her work as a healer, the Londolozi Healing House and the retreats she facilitates, she has seen again and again how certain places seem to invite us back into ourselves.
Somewhere in the conversations between these three Varty women, a question took shape. What if you could carry a little of the spirit of these places with you?
Chloe thought immediately of her oldest friend. Taz understood straight away what they were reaching for: jewellery that was beautiful, but meaningful too. Each piece would hold gemstones connected to a particular sacred place at Londolozi, along with that place’s coordinates, its story and something of the intention held within it.
And so a childhood friendship became a creative collaboration. Together, Taz, Shan, Chloe and Bronwyn wove gemstone, wilderness, story and place into a collection designed to travel far beyond Londolozi.
The arrow and the star
The designs themselves rest on two symbols, each taking its name from Shangaan, honouring a language and culture with deep roots in this land.
Anyone who has sat behind a tracker on an early morning drive will understand the first. Tracking is an act of patience and trust. A print in the sand, a scuff in the dust, a line of flattened grass. You follow what is in front of you without ever being entirely sure where it will lead. The arrow, named Ndlela (the path), carries that idea. It speaks to intuition and inner knowing, the quiet compass that points each of us towards a way that is uniquely ours.
The second symbol asks us to look up. On a clear night at Londolozi, far from any city light, the sky becomes almost too much to take in. The Milky Way spills from one horizon to the other, and the spotlight is switched off so everyone can simply sit beneath it. The star, named Rivoningo (the light), represents that sense of wonder and connection, and the reminder that we are part of something much larger than ourselves.
The two meet on the arrow pendants. Alongside a single star-set diamond, each will be engraved with the coordinates of one of Londolozi’s sacred places, so the path and the light are carried together.
The wisdom within, and the magic beyond.
Three landscapes in colour
Each design comes in three colours: the deep green of the riverine forest, the fire of a sunset, and the blue of the night sky. Every gemstone in the collection is sourced from Africa, a quiet nod to the family love of African stones that Taz grew up with. Each piece is set from dark to light, so the colour shifts the way the sky does over the course of a day.
Makomsava (Mother Nature) takes its colour from the deep greens of the bush in summer, from the great trees that line the Sand River and the dappled shade beneath them. It is about slowing down and coming back to yourself, and the idea that sometimes, to move forward, we first need to return.
Shonalanga (Where the Sun Sets) holds the reds, oranges and golds of that hour when the vehicle stops on a crest, the engine falls quiet and the whole sky catches fire. It is the threshold between light and darkness, where one chapter softens into the next.
N’weti (the moon) is a celebration of the night sky, holding the deep blues of the drive back to camp after dark, when the moon rises over the bush and the stars appear one by one, then all at once. It is an invitation to stay curious, and to trust what we cannot yet see.

Whichever colour you are drawn to, the pieces will carry the coordinates of the sacred places that inspired them. Across rings, pendants, earrings and charms, they are designed to be layered and added to over time, much like the memories gathered on safari.
Two talismans
Alongside the arrow and star designs sit two pieces created to form part of an enduring core collection, each drawn from symbols close to the Londolozi story.
Few animals are as deeply woven into Londolozi’s history as the leopard. Generations of them have lived along the Sand River, known individually and followed with great care by the rangers and trackers who have spent their lives learning their ways. Elusive and entirely at home in its landscape, the leopard has become a symbol of presence, resilience and quiet confidence. The Leopard pendant shows a seated leopard beneath a single star-set diamond, framed by a halo of diamonds that speaks to our connection with one another and the wider world. Engraved on the back are the words:
Be still enough to hear nature’s whispers, and you will remember the magic you were always part of.
The African moon moth is a symbol of transformation and becoming. Moving through the night towards the light, it is a reminder that change rarely follows a straight line, and that there is beauty in trusting the unseen.
A centenary of becoming
It feels fitting that this collection arrives in Londolozi’s centenary year. The story of this land is, in many ways, a story of transformation. A century ago it was a hunting concession, and over the decades that followed the Varty family turned away from hunting and set about restoring land that years of cattle farming had worn down, until it became the wilderness it is today. What was once tired and overgrazed is now home to leopards, lions and a remarkable web of life.
Endings softening into beginnings. Within & Beyond carries a little of that story in every piece.
Carrying a piece of the wild
Each Within & Beyond piece is made bespoke, created to your own specifications while staying true to the spirit of the collection. If a particular piece has caught your eye, you can contact Taz Watson directly, and she will customise and create it especially for you. Bespoke orders are open now through her website here.
During 2027, the collection will also find a physical home at Londolozi, with selected pieces carried in the Londolozi Living boutique. In a sense, they will be returning to the places where their stories began.
However far from the bush you find yourself, we hope these pieces become a small touchstone, bringing you back to that quiet moment before the morning drive, when the land is still waking, and you remember, just for a second, exactly who you are.
