Almost exactly a year ago, I stood in this same space and told you something none of us quite believed. Londolozi was awarded three MICHELIN Keys, the highest distinction possible, in the inaugural South African hotel selection.

This week, another extraordinary honour was shared with us.

Not only were we once again awarded the MICHELIN three keys, but out of the 2,832 hotels recognised worldwide in the 2026 MICHELIN Guide, only four received a Special Category Award. One for architecture. One for wellness. One for the year’s best new opening. And one, the Local Gateway Award, for the hotel MICHELIN judged to open the truest door onto its destination.

That one was awarded to us and it was the word gateway that moved us most!

A Gateway To Remembering

MICHELIN describes the category as recognition for hotels that facilitate the most remarkable and authentic local experiences for their guests. It has nothing to do with thread counts or design. It asks something deeper: does this place genuinely open onto where it is, and onto who lives there.

The word ‘gateway’ as resonated with Londolozi for sometime now. Londolozi is not simply a gateway to Africa, or to safari, or even to one of the great remaining wildernesses left on this planet, but to nature, to each other, and to what we think of as a great remembering: that we are not separate from the natural world. We are part of it. You feel it in the Sand River rising after rain, in elephants moving along paths walked for generations, in a leopard resting beneath a Jackalberry tree, an intelligence older than any of us, still moving through this place. Step out of the noise of an ordinary life and back into those rhythms, and something within a person tends to remember too.

That is the gateway MICHELIN put a name to this month. We had simply been calling it something else, for a hundred years.

A Living, Breathing Village

But authenticity is difficult to manufacture. It has to already be alive.
Behind the camps is not a hotel operation hidden from view, but a living, breathing village. A home. A family business. A community whose lives, families, ideas, and dreams have become woven together over generations. We call it our Futuristic African Village.

Walk through it and you pass the crèche, where the children of our Londolozi family are playing. You pass the vegetable gardens. At lunchtime, the field fills with soccer and touch rugby. People stop to talk. Someone is laughing somewhere. Someone else is fixing something. None of it has been staged for a guest. It is simply life happening.

And perhaps that is the gateway too.

People arrive from all over the world and, for a few days, find themselves sitting around the same fire, watching the same sunset, listening to the same lion calling somewhere in the darkness. Sometimes it is a tracker telling the story his own father told him, three generations passed on in a single evening. The differences remain, but something deeper becomes visible beneath them. Our shared humanity.

Ubuntu has always given Africa a language for this: I am because we are. At Londolozi, we have come to understand that the “we” extends beyond the people beside us. It includes the communities around us, the animals we encounter, and the living systems upon which every one of us depends.

The Ripple

That way of life cannot stop at our gates.
The Ripple Fund is one expression of this belief. It reaches Tracker Academy graduates learning the ancient art of reading the ground. It reaches thousands of learners through the Good Work Foundation.

Because the village within our gates has never been separate from the villages beyond them.
Dr Ken Tinley, the ecologist who helped shape Londolozi’s conservation philosophy fifty years ago, gave us a sentence that has echoed through generations:

You cannot be an island of plenty in a sea of poverty.

The restoration of land and the restoration of possibility are not separate projects. It is all connected.

Why This One Feels Different

Three MICHELIN Keys recognised the experience of staying at Londolozi: the design, service, comfort, and consistency.
The Local Gateway Award feels different because it recognises something less tangible. The village behind the camps. The people behind the experience. The land beneath it, 37,000 acres of the Sabi Sand. The relationships built over decades.

And perhaps the possibility that hospitality can be more than somewhere beautiful to stay. It can be a doorway. A place through which we enter another world for a while and return to our own, changed by what we have seen.

Care of the Land. Care of the Wildlife. Care of the People. For us, these have never been three separate things. They are one practice.

The Power of Time

There is another part of this recognition that means a great deal to us.

Time.

Londolozi is a standalone family business, and for a hundred years, generations of our family and the wider Londolozi family have returned to the same questions. How do we care for this land? How do we care for the wildlife? How do we care for one another? Season after season, generation after generation, you keep practising. You learn. You listen. You improve. And gradually, the benchmark moves, not because somebody outside tells you where it should be, but because your own understanding of care, hospitality, and stewardship keeps deepening.
Perhaps that is one of the quiet gifts of a century. You stop trying to create an experience and begin simply living a way of life. And then you invite people into it.

South Africa’s Second Year on the Global Stage

This recognition belongs within a much bigger South African story.
South Africa now holds 32 MICHELIN Key hotels, three of them at the Three-Key level, in only the country’s second year of inclusion in the MICHELIN Guide. We are immensely proud to stand alongside a South African hospitality industry operating at this level of excellence.
There is something one of a kind about hospitality in this country. Beyond extraordinary food, design, wilderness, and service lives something harder to describe and impossible to manufacture.

Ubuntu.

A generosity of spirit. A warmth. A way of welcoming another human being not simply as a customer, but as someone entering your home. That African essence sets South African hospitality apart, and it is deeply worth travelling across the world to experience.

So yes, we are profoundly grateful for this award. But perhaps what excites us most is what it names.

A gateway into the wilderness. A gateway into a living African village. A gateway into our shared humanity. And, if we are fortunate, a gateway back to something ancient within ourselves. A remembering that we belong to nature. That we belong to one another. And that when we return home, we carry some responsibility for the world we have remembered we are part of.

For one hundred years, Londolozi has been trying to hold that doorway open. What an extraordinary honour to have it recognised.
