One of the biggest differences between male and female leopards is the way they use space. While females establish their territories around food, water and safe places to raise cubs, a male’s role is centred around occupying prime ground that gives him access to a larger number of females.
The late Senegal Bush Male was on the move this particular morning, patrolling his territory. The little flick in his tail was a reaction to a group of Rattling Cisticolas frantically alarm-calling at him as he walked by.

A territory is far more than just an area on a map. It provides everything a male needs to survive and reproduce. It contains food, water and, most importantly, the home ranges of several females. Protecting that area from rival males gives him the best chance of passing on his genes.
The Maxim’s Male. He is the dominant male leopard over the majority of the southern sections of the reserve at the moment. He has epitomised what it is to be a male leopard, being highly successful over the past five years.

The size of a male leopard’s territory varies enormously depending on where he lives. In areas with abundant prey and a high density of leopards, such as the Sabi Sand, territories can be surprisingly small, often covering around 30 to 100 square kilometres. With so many neighbouring males, there simply isn’t enough space for territories to be much larger. In more remote or arid landscapes, where prey is more widely dispersed and leopard densities are lower, a single male’s territory can exceed 1,000 square kilometres. Territory size is largely determined by the availability of resources and the level of competition.
What is perhaps surprising is that even within a dense population like the Sabi Sand, territorial boundaries are not always rigidly enforced. Research from the Panthera Sabi Sands Leopard Project has shown that when prey is abundant and leopard density is high, males will sometimes share overlapping space rather than fight constantly to exclude one another. The risk of injury from repeated territorial battles outweighs the cost of tolerating a degree of overlap, particularly in areas where there is enough food and enough females for multiple males to coexist. They manage this largely by using shared areas at different times, a quiet system of avoidance that keeps conflict to a minimum. It is not weakness. It is pragmatism.

Another leopard who originated in the Kruger National Park, he has established a large territory in the south eastern areas of Londolozi.
Holding a territory requires constant maintenance. Males regularly patrol their boundaries, scent mark prominent trees and bushes, and scrape the ground with their hind feet. These signs advertise their presence to neighbouring males and help reinforce the boundaries between territories. Although these displays often prevent direct conflict, challenges from rival males are still inevitable.
The mating process itself is part of this system of dominance. When a female comes into oestrus, a male will stay with her for four to five days, mating repeatedly throughout. This extended period is not simply a matter of reproduction. It is a test. A male who cannot hold his ground through the full duration, who is displaced by a rival mid-courtship, has failed to prove himself. The female, for her part, is not passive in this. She is selecting for the male most likely to still be dominant when her cubs are at their most vulnerable.

When territorial males do come into conflict, the consequences can be severe. Fights between adult males are some of the most dangerous encounters in a leopard’s life, with injuries that can take months to heal or, in some cases, prove fatal. Even without direct confrontations, maintaining a territory demands time and energy, with regular patrols forming an important part of a male’s daily routine.
The Shingi Male — not yet territorial. Typically, male leopards are pushed out of their natal territory around two years old. Being just older than that now, he is in a difficult period of his life until he becomes territorial, which usually happens around the age of five. Exciting times lie ahead for this young male.

Becoming a territorial male is a significant milestone in a leopard’s life. Young males often spend several years living on the edges of established territories, sometimes covering large distances in search of unclaimed ground. Research has shown that dispersing males can travel an average of 11 kilometres from where they were born, with some moving considerably further when competition is intense and space is limited. This nomadic period is among the most dangerous of a male leopard’s life. Without a territory, he has no females, no genetic future, and no protection for any cubs he might sire.
Securing a territory is only the beginning. From that point onwards, maintaining it becomes one of the defining aspects of a male leopard’s life. Every scent mark left on a tree, every patrol walked in the early morning, every confrontation endured or avoided — it all serves the same purpose. To hold the ground. To keep the females. To ensure that when the time comes, the cubs that are born in his territory are his.
