A couple of lion tracking expeditions took place this week, some successful and some not. Hyenas featured strongly as did the ever-present elephant herds. Summer is in full swing at Londolozi, as you’ll see in the greenery.

James. You said to feel free to comment. Is the mating attempt with the young lions at the end of the video normal for two young “male” lions?

Well noticed; I probably should have mentioned something in the video. Yes this is fairly common behaviour, and not just in lions. The mounting of one male by another is often used to display or try and exert dominance. I don’t know the exact ages of the two young males but I suspect the one doing the mounting would be slightly older and trying to establish a pecking order; this will grant him better access to mating opportunities and the like if they are successful in establishing a territory…

Thank you James. Regarding the Xinzele female, which male would cover her usual territory – presumably she would mate with that male 1st ?
Hi Suzanne, the Flat Rock male does cover a large portion of her territory so it’s likely she simply followed him out of it. I believe the Hukumuri male also covers part of her area, and there’s a skittish male in Othawa who she may also encounter…
Excellent! I think there are two elephant calves mounting each other too trying to establish hierarchy. Wonderful leopards and lions sequence also baby impala

Hi James, it is definitely the Styx and Nkuhuma Males. The Nkuhuma Male got that wound from a wildebeest he killed on Othawa (a kill he was later seen on with the Hairy-bellied Matimba Male at the end of November). Glad to see he and the Styx Male regrouped.

Interestingly, they are half-brothers or cousins (essentially related in some way) through the Birmingham Males, who are the fathers of both. The young Torchwood Male is also fathered by the Birminghams but he’s always been far from the other two in terms of distance.
