This is a fairly easy one for the initiated.
If you haven’t seen this bird before though, you may well be left scratching your head. I remember my first encounter with one; I had zero clue what I was looking at. But once you’ve ticked one and have that image saved in your mental hard drive, you’re unlikely to mistake it next time.
We do have an image of it seated from just before it took off, but we’ll save that for the reveal in next Friday’s Week in Pictures…
Good luck!
Some type of eagle?
James, Our best guess is a Tawny Eagle!
Hi James,
Immature African Hawk Eagle in transitional plumage
Great photo! And I am trying to find out what bird it is…. ???
I am looking forward to the Londolozi blogs every day, highlight of the day.
Juvenile African Hawk Eagle?
Tawny Eagle?? James is this merely bad photography!!??
To add – Okay feathers to the foot equals ‘no Snake Eagle’.
Eagle Owl?
Tawny Eagle
Is it a Tawny Eagle?
Immature tawny eagle.
Yellow billed kite?
Maybe a tawny eagle?
James, I think it is heron of some kind
A juvenile African hawk eagle? The head shape and slight streaking have me leaning that way, over a tawny. Tough one …
It is a juvenile transitional African Hawk-Eagle. I struggled to ID the first one I saw. I was in the Pilanesberg and had it flying overhead. Luckily I managed some photos and could ID it from those!
Booted eagle?
I’m going with dark morph Tawny Eagle
Immature Tawny Eagle?
Going with the majority… an eagle, but specifics uncertain!!
Juvenile African Hawk Eagle
Great photo! And I am trying to find out what bird it is…. ???

I’m seeing this a bit late, but I’m guessing Tawny Eagle…
I believe it’s a booted Eagle
