on The Storm I Missed — And What It Was Telling Us

Thanks, Sean, for your great explanation of this phenomenon. The clouds look so impressive, enormous! The photos are fantastic!
And the video shows how intensive and even relentless the lightning was. Must have been quite a scary time to experience at the places that were hit directly.

It must have been terrifying being directly beneath that storm.

Absolutely breathtaking.

From watching the videos and seeing the photos I agree, it was incredible.

Simply amazing, another way nature offers unimaginable sensations! I do like the pictures, well done!

Thank you so much to the rangers for capturing everything for us.

so cool!

Such an incredible storm.

What an amazing sight! The sunset and constant lightening made it even more dramatic! Oh, to have missed it!
I saw the anvil-shaped cloud only once, while jetting over the US Great Plains. Impressive even then as we looped wide around it at 35,000 feet.

The lightning made it so impressive to watch. Its amazing to know how high those clouds can get to.

Hi Sean, magnificent images and video showcasing the lightning behind the clouds. Absolutely stunning to be able to view this beautiful cloud and lightning display.

Just another amazing thing to watch while out on game drive.

Incredible images! The clouds and lightning look like a war zone. I wonder how the communities underneath the storm fared.

It did look like a war zone, almost like a bomb had gone off and that was the plume of dust and smoke.

Thank you Sean for this masterclass in South African meteorology 👏

You are most welcome. I am glad you enjoyed it.

All I can say is being here for this cumulonimbus cloud that pulsated for hours with light flashes and lightning strikes was one of the highlights of my stay – so much so I posted a story for my friends. Words can’t really describe the enormity of this experience. Who needs fireworks when Mother Nature provides us this this type of skyward light?

it was such an incredible thing to see while out on a game drive.

Spectacular photography and thanks for the fascinating meteorological explanation. Maybe nature is building your water table in anticipation of a very Strong El Ninho in 2026 (forecast by some), which I think can result in low rainfall for Southern Africa in the Autumn?

That’s a totally wild explanation and well worth it. I live in Malalane, now. I came to Londolozi from the USA in 2021. After my extraordinary safari – thanks Matt and Terence & my fellow visitors – I went South to Malalane to see the Alfred Dunhill golf tournament. Unfortunately, it was canceled due to the appearance of Omicron. Rather than running away, I stayed a week and really enjoyed myself. Now I own a guesthouse in Malalane called Waterhole Lodge. We are just getting started after 3 years of renovations.
My point is, I was in the deluge under the clouds and electricity! We were drenched, as you said, and the liquid is still with us. As a matter of fact, I must ask, is this much rain in any way deletorious to the Lowveld? I am seeing my second harvest of mulberries on my tree this year. I have seen the second flowering of my Drunk Man’s tree(I think they call it that because a drunk person out for a leak better not lean up against it or they will, literally, be nailed by it). So, I see some very weird activity from the plants here. Is there anything counterproductive or anything to suggest things will be more productive? Will there be a second rut, for instance? I know this story is over a week old. i’m just catching up.
