on The Calm Before The Storm- An Imminent Battle Between Male Lions

Join the conversationJoin the conversation

Can’t wait, to see what will happen. Two, forces of nature. Ready to do battle. Can’t script it better.!!! 😊

Indeed, I think we are all eager to see what unfolds.

Exciting times. Just wish I were there. My heart supports the Ndzengha males. The only adult male lions I have seen in the wild.

It is going to be very exciting times ahead.

I’m really concerned for the fate of the cubs, so I’m hoping the Plains Camp males back off.
I’ve lost track of other coalitions in the area – what happenened to the 4 sub-adult males (and their sister) ? They were shaping up nicely last year but I haven’t heard anything about them for ages.

The reality is that the Plains Camp Males have such a large territory, so big in fact they take a long time to cover the entire territory. Leaving areas of it vacant for lengthy periods of time, then all of a sudden they come charging in. It’s going to be very interesting to see what unfolds.
The Ntsevu Males are being seen in the Manyelethi Reserve, their sister is with the Styx Young Male in southern Londolozi and Mala Mala.

I saw that extremely beautiful Ottawa male lion only two weeks or so before he got killed. It was such a waste! But obviously, as you write, pride or greed or aggression or all of it together can be a lions downfall.
So it will certainly be really exciting to see what is going to happen with these two coalitions.
Actually, at the moment I hope that the Ndzhenga Males will win this battle – hopefully not at too high a cost for any of the coalitions because they have fathered all these cubs and it would be really sad if they got killed by the Plains Camp males.
Anyway exciting news, I am looking forward to hearing more about it. or maybe you could tell the lions to wait another two weeks with their show down….??😉

I know it was such a waste for the Othawa Male to be killed like that.
I think it is going to be very interesting to see what unfolds in the future.

Exciting times! We’re looking forward to seeing both coalitions and experiencing some of that tension during our visit next month!

Certainly, very exciting times ahead.

Hi Sean, I remember well the Othawa male, an incredible specimen of his kind, going directly into the cave of death, when fighting against the Birmingham pride. Lionesses were suspected to have joined the two brothers. The Plain Camp males have very large territories, which reminds the Mapogo strategy, in long terms it didn’t pay well… they also killed the Tsalala mother. I hope the Tsalala female is protected in the territory of those two giants by the way. The Ndzenga males dedicated so much to their families, this is often rewarded by the active participation of Lionesses against the intruders, given that they have their adorable cubs… let’s wait and see. I hope the Plain Camp males will not repeat some too long steps like Mapogo did…

The Othawa Male was a magnificent lion. Yes, so I believe that the lionesses would get involved and help fight off intruders as they have a lot more at stake.

Wow, this will be an epic battle for lion supremacy. While it is probably only a matter of time before it unfolds it will shape the lion dynamics for some time to come.

It will be an intense battle and the knock on effects will ripple through the lion dynamics throughout the entire area.

I can’t wait to see what’s unfolds between these two coalitions. I know the PCM’s have a frightening reputation and seems to fear nothing when it comes to confrontation. I so wish I could witness the day they meet. Please, keep us updated, Sean!

I will do my best to keep you all in the loop with any developments.

sitting on the edge of my seat …

I think we all are.

Very explosive, I am interested, what is going on.

Its going to be so interesting to see what happens.

Ok I will be there in just about 2 weeks! Hoping for some interactions but preferably not of the most violent or fatal variety!

I hope you get to see something.

Oh my word Sean, this is going to be one huge battle between 4 immensely big lions. I am actually sitting and thinking about the Othawa male that was so brutally killed by the Birmingham males. I was so heartbroken, because I loved the Othawa male. Now again there is going to be a huge altercation between these two coalitions.

If this battle ensues it is going to be a monstrous clash.

Hollywood couldn’t script it better – memories of “West Side Story” , two gangs vying for territory!!
Right now, just wait and listen…..

Just sit back, and wait and listen.

I’m here this week–fingers crossed.

Fingers crossed.
