As we have touched on in previous blogs, we have established that zoom on an iPhone is not great at all and compromises the quality of the image. But surely there are means of improving these features? because after all the iPhone cameras are great.
You’re in luck: I’ve been doing some research on some accessories that can up your photography to an extent without all the loss of resolution.
Moment is a company that have created lenses for just this purpose; they have designed phone cases for various makes and models to suit your phone brand. These cases have threads around the camera to which you are able to attach their lenses.
They have various lenses on offer, from 18mm through to 58mm lenses, as well as anamorphic lenses which are great for getting a cinematic feel and lens flares in your video footage. What’s great about this company is that because the case has the threads to attach the lens there is no trouble in trying to line up the lens to the actual camera; this model just turns right into the lens and it’s as easy as that!
Another added value to using Moment lenses is they have released an App available on the App store, which gives you versatility in changing settings within the iPhone camera; basic settings such as Shutter, Aperture and ISO, which is a fantastic development for the more advanced user.
Bear in mind that these are not super telephoto lenses; they are made for mostly close proximity photography. These lenses do allow us to get closer without having to use the zoom all that much.
The wide angle captures landscapes and vistas beautifully, and the 58mm gives us some good depth, especially when used in portrait, capturing close-ups of people.
These tools are to help us get the most of our iPhone cameras. As a bonus, they are compact and convenient to carry around whilst traveling.
I’m sure there are many similar products out there, as iPhoneography is such a huge and growing trend. These lenses are the ones I’ve had time to use and see how they work.
It would be great to hear if you have some of these products and experience with them…
I love your tecnology tips Matt. Always something new to learn. We have got some of these lenses for the Samsung, but did not really use it yet. Leaving for Botswana next Sunday, where there should be lots of oppertunity to try it.
This technology will definitely make travel a bit easier for those who are content with the results,
Matt, we swear by the Moment lenses! We used them extensively on our July visit to Londolozi! The newer video lens (anamorphic) was incredible with their software for our videos. Now we just need to wait for them to come out with a new case for our new iPhone 11 Pro with the 3 lenses! 😉
Matt, what a great idea! An attachable lens!
I always enjoy reading your iPhone tips and this news for lens attachments will be a boon to many. I like the convenience to quickly take a snapshot of people, or the simple video of interesting animal behavior the stills can’t display, but at the end of the day, I like my cameras. Just acquired the newly released Sony a7r iv and a 24-105 lens…. six months to go until more shooting opportunities in Londolozi. I see a lot of practice in my near future!!😘📷
Insightful information, Matt. Thanks!
Do you know of any good macro versions?
