It was national s’more day earlier this month and as many of our guests at Londolozi are from the USA, I think it would be appropriate to pay tribute to the sweet ingredients that make our outdoor gatherings at Londolozi so much, well, sweeter…
The Londolozi S’more Tradition on a Family Safari
For those of you unfamiliar with this term, a s’more (sometimes spelled smore) is a traditional nighttime campfire treat popular in the United States and Canada, consisting of a fire-roasted marshmallow and a layer of chocolate sandwiched between two crackers or biscuits. The word comes from the contraction of the phrase “some more”. That one I don’t think I need to explain any further.
Call me crazy, but in my opinion there are few things more delicious than a gooey, chocolaty s’more after a full day of game drives, track moulding, fishing, soccer or swimming on a children friendly safari. As many of the kids would agree, one of the highlights of the Londolozi experience is being part of the wonderful memories that are born around the boma and an integral part of this is the post dinner s’more making competitions that arise.
It may seem easy, but creating the perfect handmade s’more can be challenging. You place the marshmallows on a skewer and toast them by placing them slightly to the side of the flames and in the area of the glowing ember coals. This in itself takes immense patience and if not done with care can result in the charring of the core ingredient. When the marshmallow is soft and golden brown, you place it between the two biscuits, whilst balancing the chocolate chips and squeeze them together. The heat of the marshmallow melts the chocolate and the result is a gooey marshmallow and melted chocolate mess that I promise you, just cannot be eaten in a tidy manner.
With all that deliciousness, resisting a second or a third is impossible, a call for “some more!” being the only guarantee.
I find myself incredibly lucky to spend my days in the camp or out in the bush, playing and learning with Londolozi’s youngest visitors but I must say that this is made even better by being able to end the day around a raging fire, out under the African stars, swapping stories with new-found friends and sinking our teeth into a delicious s’more or four!
