No Love Lost: Nyelethi Update

November 22, 2010

The remains of a young impala ram were hooked over a branch in the Jackalberry tree. As we looked up the guests gasped in unison at the realization that we had stumbled upon a leopard kill. Only when the Crested Francolins began alarming and the small Nyelethi young female leopard walk down the game trail did my heart started to beat with excitement! Having earlier seen male leopard tracks in the vicinity I now knew there were possibly two leopards in the area…

Vomba Female Hunts Scrub Hare

August 23, 2010

We were barely out of camp on the morning of 14 August, when a distinctive white-tipped tail-belonging to an animal crossing the road about 100m ahead of us appeared in the half light. On closer inspection we saw it was the Vomba female leopard, whose territory completely surrounds camp.

Are 4 Wildebeest Too Much For One Pride?

April 15, 2010

The Tsalala pride never fail to impress me. As far as a group of lions go, they are remarkably successful, enduring and deadly. Instantly recognisable by the lioness with no tail (a result of a vicious encounter with a hyena) these lions dominate the northern expanse of Londolozi. Cunning and collected, their lethargic demeanour often gives away a false sense of apathy, yet nothing could be further from the truth….To view the full post and video click on the heading above.

Young Mxabene Leopard Attempts First Hunt

September 22, 2009

The Following Video May Offend Sensitive Viewers

The Mxabene female’s 10 month old cub had been found alone, sitting atop a dry, dusty termite mound. He was exuding a sense of bravado that is so typical of young male leopards. His steely gaze was only interrupted by the flicking of his ears and rustling of his coat. It was to be a significant afternoon for him. In the space of a few hours he would demonstrate his physical prowess and deadly instincts.

In the southern section of Londolozi Private Game Reserve, bordering the Kruger National Park, a pack of resident Wild Dogs discovered two honey badgers. Southern Pride Kills Five Buffalos in 30 Seconds

August 31, 2009

It was early in the evening when the lions were found on the move by the open grasslands of the Castleton/Sparta break. Tails flicking and eyes set straight forward, it was evident that they were on the hunt. As the late August night sky set in, the Southern Pride moved towards a herd of buffalo. Sensing an opportunity the pride moved quickly and isolated a buffalo calf from the rest of herd. With stealth, strength and masterful agility the lionesses brought the calf down and ended its life.

The Tsalala Pride fights amongst each other for food

August 27, 2009

A snort from an impala gave away the presence of lion. Baboons went berserk and raced for safety in any tree available as one lioness charged into the previously peaceful scene. The racket caused by the baboons sent the antelope in all directions and this galvanized the 2 remaining lionesses into action. In a split second one lioness had grabbed a young female neatly by the throat and the other plucked a ram from the air and dumped it to the ground. She hadn’t bothered with the throat but rather paralyzed it with a bite to the back.
She dragged this with supreme strength past the vehicle and down into a donga. We worked our vehicle in there and watched as 8 cubs began the noisy battle for a meal.
