I am of the belief that elephants originated from water. Their mammoth sized bodies are so suited to bobbing in the ocean and their thick leathery hide receptive to the gentle touch of it. It was only when they moved onto dry land did their skin wrinkle and their trunks grow in order that they may eat.
We may never know if this is true or not, but I find the thought fascinating still, rather enchanting as a matter of fact. When I look at elephants I can’t deny it in my mind. These animals were born for water. They were meant to be engulfed in the fluid embrace of aquatic life and they were meant to spend a portion of every day just playing in it.
Today is World Wetlands Day. The 2nd of February marks a day wherein we should all take cognisance of the unfiltered importance of water in our own lives and in that of the natural world. Rather than be a day of pessimism about how water on this planet is decreasing, at Londolozi we believe it should be a day about celebrating how much joy and creation water brings, and that maybe we too should be like the elephant and spend just a portion of today enjoying our time with it.
