This is just a short follow-up to last week’s Monday post. It sounds like the Majingilane have had another run-in with the Selati males, or at least one of them, in the Western Sector of the Sabi Sands.
Last week saw the Majingilane following the Mhangeni pride up to the fringes of Selati-held territory, but it seems as if Londolozi’s dominant coalition have now left the Mhangeni lionesses and cubs to their own devices, and have struck back west. Two evenings ago all four males were in company together, resting up a couple of kilometres west of Londolozi’s boundary.
Roars from the west had several vehicles heading in that direction at first light yesterday morning to investigate, but the faint vibrations in the still morning air were coming from farther away than we imagined, and the Majingilane were beyond our traversing area, many kilometres away, chasing the Selatis males.
Reports from JP Joubert, a ranger currently operating out of Exeter Camp in the west of the reserve, were that the Majingilane caught one of the Selati males yesterday morning and spent the day mauling him on and off. The Selati male apparently managed to get hold of the Scar-nosed Majinglane during the day and inflict some damage to his face, but being outnumbered, it was not surprising to learn that the Selati male took the worst of it. Inexplicably the Majingilane let him go, and are currently in pursuit of one of the other Selati males as I write this.
The conflict is taking place far to the west of Londolozi so we will unfortunately not be able to follow the action first-hand, but will post updates as soon as we have them.
It will be interesting to see the state of the Majingilane if and when they return to to their Londolozi stomping grounds. Will they all come back alive? Will the Selati males see another of their number fall to the might of the Majingilane coalition?
Please post any updates or information you may have below…

Oh boy. But I hope they settle things by September or wait for me to witness their war–I can only hope.
hope neither side loses anyone!
ME TOO ! PEACE FOR A CHANGE AND LET LIVE !
I’m with Mike, hope there are no casualties on either side.
Why can we just all get along!
I hope neither side loses anyone also! It hardly seems fair that 4 of the Majingilane ganged up on 1 poor Selati!
YES I HOPE NO MORE WARFARE . NO MORE LOSS OF LIONS ! THEY ARE SO FEW LEFT OF THEM !
Wonderful shot of the Scar-nosed Majingilane post battle!
Hope they sort their problems out soon.We cannot afford to loose them.
Muy Buena Inform, acion “”londolozi”” Saludos desde Argentina.
It was kinky tail and mr t who took up the cudgels and faught
its nature playing out, 2 strong coalitions and neighboring territories will always lead to a fight.
It would be amazing to see that power in action. The power of a lion is magnificent, but to use it on each other feels wrong. I hope they sort out what they need to with no loss of life.
Who killer kinkitale or mapogo.ans) majingilane. Who killed Mr. T. Ans) selati. It would be a strong battle.
I don’t want that because I am too sad by what happen to mapogo so I don’t that to happen again.
I’m sort of confused, if the Majingilane killed Kinky Tail and the Selati killed Mr T which coalition took over that part of Magopo territory?
Hi Joanne,
The Mapogo were split at the time of Kinky Tail’s death, with him and Mr T being dominant on Londolozi and MM.
Upon Kinky Tail’s death in 2010, Mr T. moved into the western sector to join the rest of his coalition, which is where he was eventually killed by the Selati males.
Having killed him, the Selati Males took over this territory themselves, and were eventually ousted by the Majingilane in 2014/15.
Does that help?
Best regards
The Mapogo had split and divided the territory into two onw part ruled by Makhulu, Rasta, scar and Pretty boy and the other part ruled by Mr.T and kinky tail when the Majingalane were attacking kinky tail Mr.T tried to save his brother but was out numbered and fled to the other part of the territory ruled by his other four brothers they accepted him without bloodshed but then Mr.T killed all their cubs and took over the pride, Rasta and Pretty boy were killed by the Majingalane and the young Sellatis came in and fought with Mr.T, Makhulu and Scar had fled leaving Mr.T badly injured and he passed away that evening, the remining Mapogo left Sabi sands and entered the Kruger national park.
