One of Londolozi’s favourite Artists in Residence is Emily Lamb. Having spent some time here in 2009, she is now returning to South Africa for her first exhibition on Africa soil, following sell out shows in London’s top galleries. Emily’s passion for art started at a very young age, as she gazed up at her grandfather’s easel as he created works that were admired and collected all over the world. David Shepherd, who is an icon in both the worlds of conservation and the arts, has been a hugely inspiring influence in Emily’s life.
As a young girl with her family, trips to Africa started to play on Emily’s soul, and she soon realised as a young woman that this is the place that would ignite her spirit. Deeply inspired by the African bushveld, the animals and people, Emily started to express this passion on canvas.
She attended art school in London where she learnt the fundamental practice of painting and sketch. However, her greatest teacher was our bountiful continent, Africa. Emily spent holidays and any spare opportunities gaining experience on the subjects of her affection. Today she travels extensively throughout Africa pursuing the creatures and people that she so loves to paint.
The David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation is an organisation based in the United Kingdom. It serves the endangered wildlife of the world today raising money for education and awareness to people both, affected and “unaffected” by the modern day onslaught on wildlife and it’s habitat. From every painting that is sold, Emily donates a portion of the sale to the foundation. This is her way of giving back to this continent and helping to preserve it for the future generations, as her grandfather did for her.
Emily has sold extensively in London’s top galleries, as well as through the shop at Londolozi where she did a months artist in residency in 2009. This however, will be her first exhibition in Africa. In preparation, she is currently painting in the bushveld here on African soil.
