on Mud, Dust, and the Secret Spa of the Bush

Love it to see the changes when the rain arrives – and the smell of earth and rain!

Great blog! It certainly is wonderful to see how water, especially after a long period of dryness with waterholes rare and far away, transforms all life in the bush. Recreation of abundance, wonderful to watch the animals‘ happiness

Thank you for the article, Dean Jenkins. A beautiful description of how the bush transforms with the rains and of the vital role mud wallows play in the lives of animals.

While I certainly love the mud wallow of a bunch of critters I especially enjoy dust wallows. Since watching birds and zebras while at Londolozi as they revelled in the dust I’ve seen cardinals and other Virginia USA birds do the same thing.

Hi, nature knows how to talk care of herself and blooming. The first landscape picture is so beautiful. The buffalo in the mud is an excellent one, you’re right. Elephants tower and the piglets are so nice! I also like a lot the one of the Tortoise, it is a first together with the buffalo ‘s I think. Very nice blog edition!

Hi Dean, the transformation from the dry winter months to the beginning of life after the rains is refreshing and absolutely stunning. Everything in the bush seems to come alive, from the newly grass shoots, to the leaves on the trees, not forgetting the animals coating themselves in the mud and water alike. We are so dependent on our Heavenly Father’s precious rain every year, for water for the rivers and dams and growth for our environment. The animals can at last coat themselves from the parasites that bite and plague them so much.

Wonderful blog.
Magnificent photographs.
Your descriptions enabled me to smell the bush responding to the rain. I have always derived great joy from watching the spa treatments of the various game species at mud wallows. Your article rekindled memories of many fascinating sightings..fond

One of my favorite sights to see whilst on a drive after the rains, is watching elephants wallowing in the mud and then spraying it all over themselves. Reading your blog takes me back to all of those special moments viewing animals after the first rains and thereafter.
