The Wild Dog den (which has now moved; update on this coming soon) has provided not only amazing viewing, but wonderful times to just sit and listen.
It was a regular patience game, sitting quietly while the adult slept, waiting for one oft hem to call the pups out, or for the male to return from hunting while the female rested.
Sitting quietly in the bush quickly gets you in tune with the bird calls and movements. Instead of just seeing a bird and identifying it, you watch it, figuring out its movements and interpreting its behaviour; much like we do with the bigger wildlife.
One group of birds were often seen up in the dead branches above the den. They are the ones picture below, and they are all the same species.
We’ve left in a small part of the front view of the top bird. This may help you, this may throw you off completely.
The answer will be revealed in this Friday’s week in Pictures…
Good luck…
Black Collared Barbet?
It looks like a dark capped bulbul
Hello James Black-Collared Barbet
James, could Trumpeter Finch?
James, African Citril Canary?
Black collared Barbets
Black-collared Barbets
Southern Grey Tit
They are Black-collared Barbets. That greyish back with the yellow on the wings, the yellowish grey belly and the back of the head being black are all characteristic. There’s also the hint of red on the side of the head on the bird on the right.
That is going to be so difficult with ten pups and only two dogs hunting…
Fingers crossed
Black-collared barbets?
Stumped and awaiting the answer!!
Which i could have a front view of those birds to be sure of my answer!
Excited to hear about the Wild Dogs moving dens. It can’t have been easy.
I think I have to go with the black collar barbet, mostly because of the yellow/green breast feathers….
Is it the yellow fronted tinker barber?
