Eggs have become synonymous with the Easter weekend and for varying reasons, these eggs (real or chocolate) are decorated and then hidden by the ‘Easter bunny’ for children (and enthusiastic chocolate-eating adults) to find. In the build up to this years Easter celebration, we thought it would be an interesting challenge to showcase a variety of eggs, kindly painted by Mother Nature, and then ask you to guess which eggs belong to which bird. So without further ado, here are the selection of beautiful eggs, followed by a list of birds (in no particular order) for you to decipher…
Birds:
- Bateleur, Terathopius ecaudatus
- African Jacana, Actophilornis africana
- Black Cuckooshrike, Campephaga flava
- Scimitarbilled wood-hoopoe, Rhinopomastus Cyanomelas
- Hadeda ibis, Bostrychia hagedash
- Gymnogene, Polyboroides typus
- Jackal Buzzard, Buteo rufofuscus
- Plumcoloured Starling, Cinnyricinclus leucogaster
- Lizzard Buzzard, Kaupifalco monogrammicus
- Red-chested cuckoo or Peit-my-vrou, Cuculus Solitarius
- Goldenbreasted bunting, Emberiza flaviventris
- Black eyed bulbul, Pycnonotus barbatus
Please leave your answers in the comment section below by stating the number followed by the bird. We will reveal the answers on our Easter Sunday post.
THanks for showing us all these different eggs.Always wondered what type of eggs these birds lay !
Beautiful collection but much too difficult to even guess intelligently. Size or some reference to scale might help. Hope they all hatch into healthy, beautiful, reproductive members of their species! Here in North America, little ones are hatching now into a warm lovely Spring.
What an impossible challenge – but such beautiful eggs. #3 and #9 are my especial favorites! Looking forward to all those guesses from real twitchers!
WOW!!!!!! Those BEAUTIFUL eggs NEVER need colored!!!!!!! So AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!
I have taken this challenge very seriously. As I live in Australia, we do not have a South African Bird Book as reference, and don’t think I would purchase an e-book to solve this task. However, up till now I have spent about six hours on “Dr Google” attempting to match the eggs to the birds. I believe I have matched at least 7. However, as no one else has posted their thoughts I am a little reluctant to post my answers. I look forward to the answer key on Sunday. But I have to agree, there are many beautiful eggs!!!!!! Here on our property in Darwin we had a pair of hooded plovers make their nest two years in a row and the beauty of the pair’s single egg completely astounded us !!!! Thank you for issuing this “Easter” challenge, Kate.
A brilliant quiz. I’ll need to spend some time on this but I look forward to the challenge! Thanks Kate.
