Members of the Londolozi family recently travelled to the western Cape where they were hosted by the passionate and extremely energetic owner of Grootbos reserve, Michael Lutzeyer. Michael is the custodian of a pristine and beautifully preserved fynbos refuge located along the coastline overlooking Walker bay and the Kleinberg mountains.

To Burn or Not to Burn?

The debatable topic of fire; Friend or Foe, continues here at Londolozi. The management technique of using fire for savanna grassland has always been a heated debate. Some are of the opinion that this should only be done towards the end the dry season, as close to the first rains as possible. This is done so that all the dry, moribund natural material will combust and return essential nutrients to the soil. This aids in the germination of seeds and most importantly a beautiful green flush occurs which attracts great concentrations of game. Others, however, are of the opinion that one should burn in winter preceding a cold front which brings a light soaking rain. Both theories work extremely well for both parties, providing the rains come of course.

20:20 – A new vision in the bush

A few months ago, Londolozi received a visit from an eye doctor. I know I should be careful with a statement like this – because there is a significant difference between ophthalmologists and optometrists, but I didn’t bother to have my eyes tested and so I can’t verify which of the specialists we had. Anyway, several of the staff here are now happily bespectacled and some have even gone for corrective laser surgery and for now at least – we are all seeing a little better.

Happy Birthday – Mandela’s Way

In 1990 we were afforded the great honour of introducing Nelson Mandela to the natural world. Indeed it was under his inspiration that an integrated safari and conservation development model which leads the world into the age of restoration has been created ,a model which promotes the Londolozi vision of —right relations between people earth and its wild inhabitants.

From simple bushveld adventures to a convergence of ancient wisdom, modern technology and nature…

Late last year I released a book called The Full Circle. Writing this book was, not only for me, a journey down memory lane, but also a chance to reflect on three decades of watching the Safari industry evolve and unfold.
