It’s been 5 years and at last we are DONE! Every camp at Londolozi has been refurbished, with the final phase being the complete overhaul of Varty Camp, whose roots go back as far as 1926. Reintroducing this “grand old lady” to our guests in March this year was a huge privilege. Varty Camp has enjoyed remarkable occupancies, tremendous support and amazing feed back from our industry partners, who seem to have really embraced the simplicity, tradition and return to old bushveld elegance that this Original Londolozi Camp offers.

It continues to amaze us how our friends in the trade, and our extended Londolozi family, have responded to the improvements that have been made and continue to support all of our camps with strong bookings and many repeat visits. We extend to you all our sincere thanks and we assure you of our continued commitment to further improving the overall Londolozi experience.

It is because of this support that we have been able to push new frontiers in redefining the Londolozi Conservation Development Model. During 2012 we plan to actively engage with South African rural society in advancing green frontiers via the creation of Wildlife Corridors. These Corridors will link together the existing parks along ancient migratory roots, whilst allowing the economic benefits of the Economy of Wildlife to reach the wider rural community.

The dream is to not only restore nature’s original grand design but also to provide economic, ecological and social stimulus for over 600 000 people who live in the region where this Corridor is being planned.

In association with the Good Work Foundation, an NGO affiliated to Londolozi, we are in the process of establishing “leap frog” Digital Learning Centres along these corridors with an objective of addressing the needs of young learners and offering them a unique and new perspective to education, one which has never before been seen in South Africa.

Through the Good Work Foundation’s 4 Pillars of Literacy, enrolling students are invited to make the personal choice to equip themselves for a rapidly changing future such that they are able to participate in a modern African society with global reach, whilst also caring for the functionality and viability of their family.

The Learning Centres are founded on three core beliefs; the importance of ancient African wisdom; the quantum possibilities of technology and the enduring intelligence of nature. The vision is to redefine rural education and close the digital divide in rural Africa. Therefore, as 2011 draws to a close, we look forward to embracing 2012 with the dawning of a new era, meaningful partnerships with our neighbours, the building of quantum “leap frog” Digital Learning Centres across South Africa and continued strong associations with our travel partners around the world.

At the end of September, the GWF and Londolozi were part of a wonderful day of celebration in the Justicia community – the handing over of a healthy, flowing borehole at Madlala High School and Learning Centre.

The Good Work Foundation is committed to doing just that, Good Work. The mission of the Good Work Foundation is to assist and promote the transformation that needs to take place in South Africa. Yesterday was Women’s Day in South Africa. At Londolozi, many people were invited to celebrate the women who make our country so great. From the guests to the staff to members of the outside community we all met in the village for a women’s poetry competition and a soccer match.

Members from the community who are supported by the Good Work Foundation, were invited to be a part of this special event. These included the ladies from the Dabuka Women’s Co-operative in Lilydale; the caterers and hosts of the traditional Shangaan lunch in the Justicia village; the ladies from Happy Homes Pre-School. Last but not least were the Tlhabekisa Happy Girls Football Team who were invited to play a game against our very own Londolozi Lionesses women’s football team.

Arriving at Londolozi, all of the ladies were treated to a big lunch of Roast Chicken, before listening to the Poetry competition and enjoying the traditional dancing as a tribute to the women of South Africa. Our resident Saxophonist, Dean, was also there to add to the magic and entertain the celebrators.

It was a really wonderful way to celebrate our National Women’s day. Lina, the Londolozi village manager, was running the event as MC and the program was well organised. All the women felt very proud to be part of the celebrations as South African citizens. It was indeed a beautiful day for celebrating the women of this country.

Londolozi is passionate about education. Through the Good Work Foundation we are working hard to develop rural education centers in the communities surrounding our reserve. In the urban areas however there is another organisation which is also striving the develop and enhance the education of young minds in South Africa.

The organisation is called the Bokamoso Trust and is based around the simple premise that many people collectively contributing a small monthly amount will allow for a child to be put through school and given a decent education. The more people contributing, the more children are put through school. Conceived by a group of friends, one of which is a former Londolozi Ranger – Graeme Marais, the Trust has been successfully growing since 2007.

This year a few members of the Bokamoso Trust are running the Comrades Marathon, an 89km road race between Durban and Pietermaritzburg, to raise money and awareness for their cause. They are doing this by allowing you to place bets on how long each of the runners will take to complete the run. The individual with the closest prediction will win back 10% of the total funds raised, whilst the remaining 90% will go towards the education of more children.

Despite the enormous changes in the economies of the developed world and the strengthening of our local currency, 2010 has been a great year with a welcome boost from the Soccer World Cup.  We particularly enjoyed presenting the luxurious and flexible New Pioneer Camp 1926 to our friends around the world.  In the true spirit of partnership you have supported us with bookings beyond anything we could have imagined.  Pioneer Camp has been well received by all who have stayed there so far.

In parallel with this new development the operational leadership team and our camp managers have been working closely with Shan Varty in a relentless drive to get, and keep, all the other camps into Picture Perfect (PP) order.  The so called PP program never sleeps and, so it seems, neither does the Londolozi management in their ongoing desire to continually “sharpen” the Londolozi Experience for our guests.

Chris Kane Berman continues to guide Londolozi toward cutting edge sustainable technology with the production of his third prototype electric Land Rover now in service.  Prototype No 2 caught fire one eventful evening leaving Kane Berman literally putting out fires…

We certainly see philanthropy as a growing global trend and in this regard the Good Work Foundation’s (gwf) footprint in the neighboring communities continues to grow.

During 2010 many graduation ceremonies have taken place as successful graduates completed courses in basic computer skills, typing skills, ICDL Certification, FGASA level 1 and 2, English literacy level 1 – 4, cooking, food and beverage, hospitality, game ranging and computer repair.

The gwf continues to apply its strategy of the 4 pillars of hope  (Digital, English, Creativity and Environmental Literacy ) in all its educational interventions throughout many of our neighboring schools.  Additionally, a number of teacher training workshops in creativity and First Aid have been held at the Londolozi learning centre.

The gwf results for 2010 speak for themselves :

• 30 teachers have received First Aid certificates.
• Training and resources have been provided for 20 Home Based care givers.
• A pilot Digital Literacy programme is operational at a local High School.  It is open to students, teachers and parents, many of whom have already obtained the ICDL qualification.
• Vibrant English Literacy teaching continues at the Sam Nzime School near Londolozi.
• The 4 pillars of hope guest tour, exclusive to Londolozi, includes lunch and entertainment at “Ma Public” and the proceeds from these tours continue to support four small yet sustainable businesses where the gwf provides ongoing guidance to these dynamic entrepreneurs.
• The gardens project has found its own way and is now being run as a co-operative with a number of individuals having gardens in their own homes and supplying the lodge with vegetables on an ad hoc basis. — Readers are warned —  ‘Spinach prices are set to plummet this season due to massive over supply in the local markets.’
• Finally my own particular favorite…… Londolozi buys 100% of all toilet paper used on site at the lodge from the Dabuka women’s co-operative – single and double ply available!  These ongoing training teaching and capacity support efforts are made possible because of you and your support!

So here it is…the 2010 Challenge4aCause movie.  We hope that you will enjoy watching exactly what the Challenge4aCause was all about and seeing exactly where your donations have gone.  It is because of all of you that we have raised over R 500 000 for the Good Work Foundation and Save the Rhino Trust.

The moon was still high up in the murky sky when we left on the first morning.  Chilly legs wound the pedals to warm up and hunched shoulders lent forward to gain that little bit of extra momentum.  The guides were stone faced in their explanation of the day ahead and nothing in our minds could quite make the impending 360 kilometers of graveled, rocky terrain seem anything but challenging.  But that was the point….to do the challenge…and to do it for a cause.

For those of you who have not been following the build up to this years Challenge4aCause, it is a 360 km mountain bike ride through the Damaraland Wilderness (think Namibian Desert with lots of rock) to raise awareness and money for the Save the Rhino Trust in Damaraland as well as the Good Work Foundation in South Africa.

The challenge was organised by Cape Town based tour operator RhinoAfrica and consisted of participants from the South African travel industry, including a team of five from Londolozi.

To say that the ride was challenging is an understatement.  An average of 60 kilometers a day is tough, but added to that was the ever shifting terrain of rocks, shale, gravel and fine sand as well as the blistering desert heat.  If not for the astounding beauty, energy and wildlife of the Damaraland region, the ride would have been even tougher still.

The Londolozi team would love to be able to claim victory on all the days stages, owing to our dedicated training schedule which we put in for 3 months prior to the ride, however the challenge was about encouraging every member to finish each day and enjoying the magical desert scenery more than anything else.

Camping was basic, rustic and very sandy…yet at the same time absolutely perfect.  The environment lent itself to our rows of khaki flavored tents, wobbly shower buckets and dinners cooked on an open fire.  Not even a few horned adders could stop us from relaxing in camp at the end of every days riding.

The adventure was incredibly special both as a feeling of accomplishment and to have had the privilege of cycling through one of Namibia’s most remote regions.  To pedal amongst Oryx, Springbok, Giraffe and Lion felt as surreal as the brief sighting of one of the desert adapted Black Rhinos that we were riding to conserve.

By the 7th and final day of riding we thought we were looking sharp.  360km under the belts, over 40 hours in the saddle and legs that were now carved from steel, our energetic crew rode into Doro !Nwaras Camp to complete the 2010 challenge.  With the final pedal strokes our bikes were swiftly dropped in exchange for ice cold Tafel beers and congratulations.  Amongst all the celebrations we once again paid tribute to the enduring work that the Save the Rhino Trust is doing in Damaraland as well as to the continued efforts of the Good Work Foundation back home.

Well done to all members who completed this years Challenge4aCause and an especially big thank you to each and every individual who contributed to the fundraising.  Your generosity has made a tangible difference which is strikingly evident in visiting these remote destinations.

The first time I went to a traditional lunch, they slaughtered a goat and then made me skin it.  It was many years ago in a very rural community which saw me having to stumble my way through the preparation and eventually force down a portion of my meal.

Traditional and cultural trips are not something that all visitors to South Africa want to experience, yet for those who do have an genuine interest you will be glad to know that my latest excursion was nothing like the first.

I had tagged along with a group of guests on the 4 Pillars of Hope Community Tour which is now on offer at Londolozi.  We visited the Dabuka Women’s Cooperative and Sam Nzima Primary School before ending our community trip at the traditional home of the tour’s guide, Linky Nkuna.

This lunchtime experience is beautifully authentic and a hugely fun.  Our group was treated to fresh, organically grown vegetables for lunch.  It is encouraging to see the vegetable gardens that have been developed in the communities surrounding Londolozi starting to yield benefits.

We had barely finished when the choir arrived to led us into festive singing, albeit with a some locally brewed beer to aid the vocal chords.  By the time we had finished chatting to the ladies who prepared our meal, it was almost time to go.  My first traditional experience may have been an eye opener, but this last one was just plain fun!

The balls got bigger…this was always this biggest indication that winter was surely on its way.  It wasn’t because of the cold, but rather the heat which determined the size and strength.  As the cold months approached us, small and hard cricket balls turned into softer, inflated soccer balls as football became the major sport played at every primary school around South Africa.

It had been years since I last had thought about this, yet when I drove into Sam Nzima Primary School, in the surrounding community of Lilydale, the memories came rushing back.  We approached to throngs of young learners chasing around, shooting balls and scoring goals on the temperamentally grassy pitch.

This post is not about football as I merely wanted to draw the comparison to a school which was last featured playing cricket on this blog.  In between that time, a lot has changed for the better at Sam Nzima School.

As Sam Nzima is one of the primary schools which receives assistance from the Londolozi Learning Centre it is both reassuring and inspiring to see that the long term benefits of staff and guest’s time, efforts and donations are really gaining momentum.  Each time that I visit the school, there seems to be a new hive of activity, development and engagement from every person involved.

The young boys throng around in their masses, chasing after a football, imitating their favorite soccer heroes.  Young girls are caught up in dancing lessons representing their heritage.  Teachers are always working with and developing a new individual to ensure they do not get left behind.  A water pump has been installed which provides water for the vegetable gardens that are being grown at the school.

New buildings that were built by the parents of the learners have truly become classrooms.  Colour, shapes, maps and aids now adorn the walls, surrounding the packed room of young people who are seizing the opportunity that is being presented to them.  The school is living, breathing and rapidly moving forward into the future.

To experience how the school is improving is to be inspired.  A report, blog post and even video footage is enlightening to see, however the true reality lies in experiencing it for yourself.  It is a pulse that has started beating.  Amidst the sumptuous cuisine, stunning wildlife and luxurious rooms that are offered at Londolozi, lies the more subtle aspects of a true African experience – the people….and to see these young learners is to see the real future of South Africa.

The barbed wire fence surrounded a lone, gated building where the women were toiling over their wares.  To the left, long rolls of circular tubes were being spun relentlessly whilst on the right, these completed rolls were sawn off into digestible sized units.  In the middle of a dingy concrete building in rural South Africa, nobody would suspect that 8 unemployed and formerly abused women are standing up to fend for themselves using toilet paper as their weaponry.

Mo Groch had first met these women through the adult literacy classes she runs.  A core part of Londolozi’s social upliftment and development, these classes have been going on for 18 months in the aim of empowering local rural people to read.  In addition to teaching people literacy, it has also built strong relationships with the champions who are the heart and soul of the Lilydale and Justicia communities surrounding Londolozi Game Reserve.

With the assistance of these community champions, the 8 ladies of the Dabuka Cooperative, translated to “You Strike a Women, You Strike a Rock” saw the potential of a possible micro business opportunity and applied for government funding.  This process started in 2007 with toilet tissue being identified as a product that would be consumed widely.  It was also an item that many rural people had to travel a long distance to buy…if they could afford it.

The proposal was submitted to the government and through the department of social services, they were put in touch with the manufacturers of the toilet roll making machine -  Zhauns.  Zhauns donated all the equipment and a service contract for the machinery that these ladies needed.  It took them two years of persistent visits to local authorities before they were eventually given a piece of land in Lilydale with a half finished building.  The ladies completed the roofing and then started production of the toilet rolls in March 2010.

When Mo visited the project at the beginning of April, she was hugely inspired by the courage, determination and skill of these 8 women to begin their own business.  After talking to Londolozi, we realised this was a local business we would not only like to support but believed would be an opportunity to further empower these inspirational women.

Back at the lone building, the push of a big red button sees a surge of electricity enliven the circular machine.  The revolutions begin slowly at first and then speed up to wrap layer upon layer of fine paper over another.  With it, the rural economic machine is also beginning to wrap layer upon layer of potential and output into the community.  Sometimes it is just this surge of opportunity is all that is needed to give momentum to helping people create their own businesses.

Mo loads up her car until it is bursting with toilet paper and begins the drive through the reserve back to Londolozi.  The toilet paper is not only for all the staff back at the lodge, but part of the broader plan to keep conservation and community sustainable by investing in local people who are taking positive steps forward to better themselves and their communities.

‘Londolozi’ means Protector of all living things.  True to our values we now bring you a new frontier on the conservation offensive.  Six individuals from Londolozi have come together with a mission to raise R 500 000 for an endangered species and literacy, because ultimately, for us, Africa is about the fusion of people and animals and about reconnecting the human spirit back to the wilderness.

The Good Work Foundation & Save the Rhino Trust

The 2010 Challenge is a 7-day grueling bike ride through the northern Namibian desert, known as the Damaraland….and we’ve signed up.  In the last week of July we’ll join forces with 12 other cyclists, from the Safari and Travel industry, to brave 330 km of harsh desert conditions from the blistering midday heat to the icy nights sleeping in tents.  There will be physical hardship as we negotiate extreme terrain from cobbled fields to steep mountain passes and our worst nightmare: chaff.

But the fun doesn’t stop here – as we all know there’s no such thing as a free cycle!

The half a million bucks, which will be raised from the event, will energise the Good Work Foundation to continue its work teaching English, Digital, Conservation and Creative Literacy.  In addition a portion of the money raised will be used to fund the continued existence of the endangered Black Rhino in Damaraland.

The Londolozi Easter holiday program for staff’s children is rocking and rolling.  25 little bunnies arrive bright eyed and bushy tailed at 9 every morning (most are waiting patiently long before the teachers arrives) with great anticipation for their day’s schedule.  Sam Loring along with Precious, Mylord, Sizakele and Confidence are ensuring that the bunnies aren’t disappointed.

The Program is designed to keep kid’s busy and out of mischief during their visit home during the holidays – but more than that we want to keep the kid’s moving in creative and stimulating head spaces.  This is in line with the Good Work Foundation’s philosophy that creativity can help to unlock young people in crisis as well as be a skill that is essential moving forward into an age when ingenuity will be the driving force.  We have been getting our hands dirty cutting, pasting, painting and making bunny ears and fluffy rabbit pencil holders.

The older bunnies from 12 years old and upwards are being taught vital computer skills that are often missing from the rural schools curriculum.  The Good Work Foundation is providing a major leg-up for them, having realized that if you can’t speak ‘computer’ you can’t be competitive in a modern world.

Of course the main reason the 25 children pitch up everyday is in hope that they will be taken on a game drive.  A trusty game ranger joins us to assist with sports and taking the bunnies out to the bush.  Everything is exciting to them and we’ve had great sightings: a leopard curiously eyeing a tortoise as a giraffe stands by nervously eyeing the vehicle, herds of elephants and lots of impala.  What a pleasure it is to experience the bush through the eyes of these young children.

Whilst the bunnies are experiencing the magic of nature; on a deeper level they are being imbibed with a sense of how deeply important nature is to all of our lives – to not only our livelihoods but the liveliness of our spirits.  There is still another week left of the program but here are some photos of what we’ve been up to so far:

Towards the end of last year, the Good Work Foundation received a large donation of stationery and other accessories for children to use whilst at school.  This generous donation was made, in particular, to the Sam Nzime and Babati Primary schools in Mpumalanga.

The Sam Nzime and Babati Primary school are two out of five ‘pillars of hope’ that the Good Work Foundation is supporting in the areas surrounding Londolozi Game Reserve.  With the help of Londolozi guests and other supporters, these ‘pillars of hope’ are now actively providing a focus on early childhood development as well as digital, english and environmental literacy in the surrounding communities.

Kate Groch, CEO of the Good Work Foundation, delivered the stationery to the two schools recently and was met with wonderful excitement from the young children.  Each learner was able to receive pencils, books, rulers and files to enable them to learn more effectively.

As Kate said: “It is fantastic to see a school year begin with abundance.  With this support each student has enough stationery to get started and to be able to learn a little bit easier.”

Today is different from usual beginnings of years.
We all have pens, pencils and books to work in.
A big truck brought all the boxes to our school Last year in November.
Our teachers told us it was full of things for us to use at school.
We were very excited and could not wait to see what was inside the boxes
When we got back to school.
We could start working the day we got back.
We all had pencils and the older classes had pens We also had rulers and
staplers and notebooks.

Sam Nzima school is a tiny outpost of education in the long strip of rural communities that make up the Bushbuck Ridge Region.  It is a poor school in terms of its financial assets yet hugely rich in the wealth of talented learners and sportsmen who attend school there, the teachers that educate as well as the parents who put time and effort into improving their situation.

Having just returned to school from the December holidays, everyone involved in the school is energized by what they were able to achieve whilst school was out.  Gathering contributions and support from parents, the school has built two new classrooms.  It is remarkable achievement considering the parents used their own capital and manpower to accomplish what was necessary before the school opened for 2010.

Spending long days laying the foundations and then building each classroom brick by brick the task was achieved.  Furthermore the classrooms are both painted and furnished with blackboards, chairs and desks for the children to work from.

Londolozi and the Good Work Foundation are hugely inspired to see schools whom we support taking such an active initiative to better themselves and the future of their children.  We look forward to keeping up our support to Sam Nzima and providing the necessary guidance for their purpose and development. Well Done!

It was quintessential rural South Africa.  The muddy roads, established Marula trees and concrete huts which had been sneezed across the Bushbuckridge lowveld.  Amidst the random scatterings of the village, little boys played soccer in torn and faded Manchester United shirts whilst life carried on around them.  It was a Saturday morning, yet the children were at school.  The end of the year was graduation time and for the Grade 1 Class of Xalakani School (A primary school supported by the Londolozi Learning Centre and Good Work Foundation) it was an incredibly special day.

Despite the young age of the learners, an entire village had come out to celebrate the future of their community and our country.  The grade 1 graduation celebration was inspirational.  There was no poverty, only optimism.  No scenes of starving children rather a communal feast and where the soulless processions of other academic ceremonies detract from the enjoyment, this was about color, revelry and rejoicing.

It is in South Africa, more than anywhere else in the world, that I have enjoyed and experienced the real sense of community.  Here community is more than centrally located individuals, like minded people or forced relationships.  Here community is based around the continual and shared enjoyment of being a part of each others lives…and expressing that enjoyment.

The ubuntu in this community is real simply owing to the myriad of genuine interactions occurring all at once.  The formality of the event is completely overshadowed by the rapture of celebrating this day.  The western world may have drilled the importance of seeking attention and recognition into people’s brains, yet here amongst rural South Africans, attention isn’t needed because its not actually important.  Whereas some people dance alone, South Africans dance together.

There are many more children who are starting to move through the education system and develop their lives, however there are also many children who have the potential but are never empowered to use it.  All of these children can be anything they want given the correct opportunities.  We must never forget that boys from these small South African villages have grown up to lead this country through dramatic struggles and are currently leading it today.

This is neither a call to action nor an intended guilt trip.  Much like the concrete huts, this is a scattering of lessons that I learned in abundance by opening up to new South African perspectives and experiences.  More than that this is truly a realization that the various layers of South Africa, in all its complexity and diversity, is steeped in ubuntu and community.

Fresh Lion Tracks

Jess Boon, Londolozi Ranger, and Jaco Myburgh, Londolozi Executive Chef, recently embarked on a 44okm mountainbike ride from Londolozi Game Reserve to Ponto do Ouro in Southern Mozambique.  ‘Riding to Break the Cycle of Hunger’ was both the name and the purpose of their adventure as the intent of the journey was to raise money for the Good Work Foundation.  More specifically to use that money to buy food for Maggie Mnisi’s Creche and Eric Ubisi’s Orphanage in the communities surrounding Londolozi.
Maggie Mnisi, Londolozi Living, started her own creche in the rural Seville Community and Eric Ubisi, Londolozi Kitchen, started an orphanage in the Manyeleti Community.  Both projects are assisted by the Good Work Foundation which aims to bring positive Community Development Interventions to the rural communities in which they work.

With sponsorship from many of Londolozi’s kitchen suppliers such as Cavaleri Cheeses, Anton Cycles and JES Catering, the pair set off from Shaw’s Gate on the border of the Sabi Sands Game Reserve.
Recounts Jess: “We had just ridden out of the reserve when we spotted lion tracks on the road ahead.  Two lionesses had escaped and now they were roaming around the wilderness area outside the reserve.  It was incredibly exciting to begin the trip like that, however Day 1 was actually very tough.  I had done little preparation for the expedition and so I found the hills toward the end of the day extremely challenging.”

Dusty Roads

Staying over in White River, the pair spent the next two days winding their way through rows of sugar cane fields, beautiful gorges and through the border into Mozambique.  As beautiful as neighboring Mozambique was, it presented its own set of challenges and experiences.  From Day 4 to Day 6 Jaco and Jess spent most of their time on long, hard and dusty roads grinding out the kilometers.  At the end of every day, the pair would seek out accommodation from local villagers or campsites.  Jess says that: “The most incredible thing about Mozambique is the people, who are so hospitable and willing to help travelers passing through.  We experienced such fantastic generosity from everyone we came into contact with.”

By Day 6, they were close to end of their journey.  The trail led them further south through the Maputo Elephant Park and closer to the warm sub-tropical waters of the blue/green Indian Ocean.  There, on the final day, Jess and Jaco rode their bikes off the broken roads, onto the sandy beach and into the bay of Ponto do Ouro to celebrate their achievement. Jaco believes that “It was so satisfying to finish the trip because of the whole purpose of what we were riding for.”The trip was significant because of so much more than the physical accomplishments.  As with any challenge, the purpose of the journey plays such a huge role in driving it forward.

In pedaling across a small section of Africa, Jaco and Jess both found new perspectives on this continent and ultimately contributed to the betterment of rural children’s lives through the Good Work Foundation.  Londolozi is extremely proud to have them as part of the team and to have them adding value in such a unique way.  The Good Work Foundation is also incredibly grateful to the generosity of the sponsors who were kind enough to get involved.

There is so much to this self-confessed dark continent of Africa that surpasses our own preconceived notions.  All it takes is the first unknown step into an unknown world to realise that despite the boundaries, cultures and inherent differences between people in Africa, it is made that much easier by thriving on the same sense of community, good will and fellowship amongst one another.

Gav teaching a game of catch

Maggie Mnisi, who works in Londolozi Living, together with the Good Work Foundation has been actively involved in running a nursery school for the children in her community over the last two years.  Rhandzami School (which means ‘To Love’) is situated in the Seville community and is aided by the work and effort of a few community members, in particular Judith Mahanke the school’s headmistress.  The school is a significant project which is part of a longer term plan to move into proper facilities with trained teachers to educate the young learners.

Yesterday was another step in that direction as John and Nancy Smith from Michigan came back to Londolozi on their 2nd visit with bags full of toys and learning materials for the sschool.  On their last trip, having heard about the school from Maggie, a visit was organised and they were amazed at what was taking place.  Their donation included learning materials, toys, activities and sports equipment that will be greatly used by all the children at Rhandzami School.

John & Nancy were escorted by their ranger, Gavin Lautenbach, and Maggie to the school where they reconnected with the teachers, met the children and handed out the toys.  Much to the excitement of the children there were interesting games and toys to play with as well as a large cake to celebrate the event.

Both the Londolozi family and Rhandzami School are incredibly grateful to John & Nancy for the generosity they have shown in the time and gifts they have put back into Rhandzami School.  It is with hope, that the next time they come, the new school facilities will be in use, the toys still being played with and the children thriving.

South African Cricket Captain, Graeme Smith, stayed at Londolozi over the weekend to open our recently constructed cricket net. The top cricketers from Sam Nzima School, in the neighbouring community of Lillydale, were invited to participate in an hour long coaching session with Graeme. Once the captain had cut the ribbon to open the net, the children (and some over enthusiastic Londolozi rangers) were given the opportunity to bowl at one of the world’s premier batsmen. Londolozi is hugely grateful to Graeme for giving of his time in the baking lowveld sun to help us unearth our local talent.

Mo Groch, who heads up the Londolozi Learning Centre, says “the main emphasis of the cricket net is to introduce cricket to children in the communities neighbouring Londolozi. We want to teach educators the game so that they can spark a cricketing interest in the learners at their schools.”

The net is the result of a cricket coaching clinic that Mo and Chris Goodman, Londolozi head ranger, conducted at Sam Nzima School. The response to the new game of cricket was overwhelmingly positive such that Mo and Chris set themselves a goal. Build a cricket net, nurture and develop an interest in cricket and ultimately bring the top cricketers from Sam Nzima to open the Londolozi net with Graeme Smith..

Chris Goodman said, “Cricket was something we chose because a lot of the rangers here have an interest in it and also have the desire to spark other people’s interest in the game. It is a sport that doesn’t have much representation in this area and is really an untapped resource for potential cricketers. To have Graeme Smith, the captain of the South Africa, coach aspirant cricketers was a fantastic way to develop enthusiasm for the game.”

The cricket net was built by Gauteng based, Heyn’s Turf, who came out to lay the foundation and build the net. Londolozi is hugely optimistic that when the sport takes off in the area, other organisations will get involved in the development of future cricketing stars in this corner of the world.

Londolozi’s mission is to ‘create a space and a place where people can be the best versions of themselves’. The cricket net is another step to providing an opportunity where talented young local children can discover an avenue to becoming the best versions of themselves.
