Dastkar Ranthambore is a women’s self help initiative started in 1989. Located next to Shar Bagh Luxury Tented Camp, the co-op produced handicrafts created by local villagers, particularly women from the surrounding areas. The story begins in 1989, when a 400-sq kilometer swath of dry deciduous forest in the Sawai Madhopur district of south-east Rajasthan was turned into the Ranthambore National Park, one of the Best Places to view wild tigers in India.
The Dabuka women’s co-op in Lilydale, just outside of the Sabi Sands, bares a striking similarity to the Dastkar Ranthambore. The logic of creating jobs, skills and opportunities around the economy of wildlife is the same model that Londolozi has pioneered since its early beginnings in the 1970’s.
