In the early 70s, Londolozi, then known as the family farm Sparta, was just beginning to introduce guests to the safari experience. In those days guests brought their own bedding, food and Land Rover if they had one! The reserve has come a long way since then and today our guests experience exceptional cuisine in Relais and Chateaux awarded Camps.
It’s not only the food and camps that make Londolozi exceptional, it’s about the feeling that you experience when you set foot on the reserve and are given a warm welcome to feel completely at ease. It’s the incredible wildlife and the rangers and trackers who make your experience that much more rewarding. It’s about space to connect with the wilderness as the sheer beauty of the landscape stretches before you as far as the eye can see.
So what is it then, that makes each Londolozi camp different?
The camps at Londolozi are ideally situated within walking distance of one another over the space of one kilometre on the banks of the lush Sand River. See the map below for an indication of the distance and walking time between each of the camps. There are five different camps, each with their own distinctive features and targeted towards different ages and styles of travelers. Because of their differences, the prices for each camp vary offering guests a wide range of choice not only in accommodation but also in price. To make it easier, we’ve compiled a few of each camp’s features and facts to help you decide which choice is right for you.
Here’s a look at the famous five:
TREE CAMP
Six private suites
Tree Camp embodies the essence of what Londolozi continuously strives to achieve in transcending and redefining the safari experience. This is a camp of elegance and simplicity. It’s a place of gorgeous leadwoods, leopards, orchids and soft glowing candlelight and lanterns. It’s a place of storytelling where lazy afternoons are spent on decks, enjoying the view of the Sand River and beyond, a place where elephants feed on the plentiful riverine vegetation that is found in the ancient riverbed below. It is stylish in every detail and feature from the plunge pools on your bedroom deck to the glamorous Ralph Lauren wallpaper and plaited leather beds.
Tree Camp is one of our Relais and Chateaux Camps. The camp has recently undergone a revamp – click here to read more.

FOUNDERS CAMPS:
Ten Superior chalets
Founders Camp honours past guests and staff who have contributed to building the Londolozi that we have today. It is due to their efforts over the last 40 years that Londolozi is the place that it is, embodying a common ideal to protect and create a safe haven for wildlife.
This camp is enchanting and intimate with beautiful views over the Sand River. Ten superior chalets, suited for travelling families are situated in the shade of ancient Ebony trees along the banks of the river. Modern fabrics in rooms and on the main deck create a young and vibrant energy. Distressed wood decor provides a soft palette of bushveld hues amidst which to gaze east down the Sand River and appreciate the wilderness.

PIONEER CAMP:
Three Suites (that can be converted into a private family homestead for 12)
Pioneer is the third of our Relais and Chateaux camps. It is a camp that is steeped in the early history of Londolozi, honouring the first families, the Varty and Taylor ancestors. These early families traveled to Londolozi on foot, by rail and wagon over 80 years ago.
The camp has become symbolic with beautifully lit lanterns that cover the deck, an old-fashioned and romantic hideaway that tells stories of adventurers in a bygone era. Ralph Lauren materials paired with antique maps, kuba cloth, herringbone tweeds and crystal chandeliers give this camp a stylish African twist.
Focused on multi-generational family travel, this adaptable camp can also be converted into a private bush home for family groups of six to 14 people through linking glass sky walkways into interconnected family units.
CAMP FACTS
- Can either be used as individual suites for three couples or as a high end multi-generational family bush home
- Interleading skywalks – offering quick and safe access between two suites

Tree Camp is my favorite. . . though I *love* the black tile bathroom in Pioneer Camp! Really all stunners.
Absolutely! Hard to pick a favourite although I do have a soft spot for Pioneer Camp.
I am homesick.
I could live in Pioneer Camp for the rest of my life.
Happily!
Stayed in Tree Camp in 2001 and it was magical! Now we are coming back in September to Granite, to celebrate our 40th anniversary. Heaven on Earth, and we can hardly wait!!
