Don’t fear the Snake

March 29, 2010

There is something about snakes that frighten most people. It could be the menacing glare, flickering tongue or the sinister expression that these poor serpentine creatures have been imbued with. Agreeably, they are not the most aesthically cute and cuddly animals on the planet, yet they do have their place and position within the broader eco system…even if it happens to be just outside my window… To view the full post and video click on the heading above.

Macho

March 25, 2010

Young male leopards are indescribably macho. They strut around with distended chests and practice menacing stares with asinine growls. Their lives are not so much about actually being macho, but rather the impersonation of it….however, anyone will tell you that this is really the same thing. Ximpalapala (shim-parlour-parlour)

March 22, 2010

It’s not quite “Chomolungma”, goddess of the earth or Everest. It’s a koppie or small hill that lies in the north western corner of Marthly. But even small koppies have geological histories that can be impressive. “Chomolungma” and the other peaks and buttresses of the Himalaya have their origin in India’s migration from the eastern half of the great dark continent Africa , finally crashing into Asia. Ximpalapala was already here – waiting to be uncovered by time and erosion and I’m sure if India ever decide to make her journey a round trip she would probably still be here; she’s that eternal. Don’t Play With Your Food

March 11, 2010

There is a great grass paradox at Londolozi. When you leave the Varty Camp Deck and head for the carpark along the beautiful wooden walkway hugging the bank of the Sand River, you soon find yourself crossing a neat lawn to get to the landrovers. You climb into the car and head for the bushveld, soon to become lost amidst the March high grass. To view the full post and video click on the heading above.

The Elixir of Nature

March 8, 2010

I love this wisdom that Jerry has. Nature has imparted some of her best secrets on this friend of mine It is part of the reason that Jerry is such a warm and wonderful person, unflappably gentle with everything and with a permanent smile that eminates from deep within his being. His closeness with nature has enabled him to cope with changes in his life that would have the rest of us running for psychologists and pills. Camp Pan Male mates with Nottens Female

March 5, 2010

The Nottens female was a long way out of her territory. One of the oldest remaining descendants of the 3:4 female, she had moved north towards the Sand River in a desperate attempt to mate. Her years were like ripples on the river, gently flowing away, melting into the currents before they would be sucked and dissolved back into the stream of life. Her most recent set of cubs had not survived and as an aging leopard she was yearning for a litter once more. A last set of cubs to continue her legacy, before she became too old, her timing too late and her ripples faded back into the stream. To view the full post and video click on the heading above.
